Kovu swung a bag over his shoulder before jumping down from the fruit tree, the bag almost completely filled with fruit he had picked. Today was especially warm and he wasn't planning on staying out for long. The young man was in need of food since his supply of apples had lowered into the single digits.
Just the other day he heard a villager complain that they didn't have many apples themselves and questioned where they could be going. It was then that the young man decided it would be best to take different foods instead of the same thing over and over again.
His eyes glanced over the area before he walked into the fields of tall cornstalks to make sure no one was watching him. With his right hand he felt the stalks to check for any that were not touched by gatherers and much to his surprise, they hadn't begun picking the corn yet. Kovu's lips turned into a smile as he began stocking his bag with fresh corn.
From a distance he heard the crunching of leaves, or maybe it was from the cornstalks, it didn't seem to far away whatever it was. Kovu shut his bag and immediately made his way out of the corn field in hopes of not getting caught. His pace slowed into a casual walk as he made his way past members of the community that were gathering other foods. He didn't want to look too suspicious, after all.
Swiftly and quietly, he snagged a coconut from a wheelbarrow while a woman wasn't looking as he began his journey back to him home. His home was not far from the field, in fact he was almost home when the clueless young man began feeling like he was being watched.

Simba was out on one of his usual nature walks. There was something about nature that drew him. He felt such a strong connection to it. Perhaps that's why he felt more at ease there than he did in the village. He didn't know why he felt this way, but he did. Perhaps it was because the village had a stronger connection to the Queen. He didn't like how she ran things. Her taxes were beginning to become unfair, and she seemed to cut herself off from those she reigned over at times. Simba didn't believe in any of that. He believe to be a leader meant being fair and firm. He believed it mean connecting with your community, being involved with its people and being one of them, not over them. Simba almost didn't catch the young man before he finished stealing from the Fields. However, he eyed him just in time to witness his last crime. Simba didn't react angrily and rush the boy in some violent rage. That was not how he did things. Instead, he picked up his pace a little and made his presence known when the two were in a more secluded spot. "You know there's other ways of obtaining food in the Fields," he said. "Such as asking. There's good people there. We help one another out."KOVU JACQUES ASSEMBÉ

Kovu didn't care about rulers or even rules for that matter. Before he met Rehema he was just living the way he wanted too. He spent his days watching villagers and roaming by night. When he joined Rehema's side he began to learn so much from him.
Today, though, his training wasn't even in thought. He saw no reason to use his training to sneak home, he thought he was home free until he heard the voice behind him. He was caught. Kovu paused for a moment with his eyes upon his home.
It was close. He was so close.
Kovu slowly turned around, immediately making eye contact with the man who had called out after him. Immediately he searched the man with his eyes still locked onto his, a small thing he learned from Scar that gave him a sense of who he was talking too without letting them know you were doing so.
"I don't need any help." Kovu spoke with a straight face.
This man before him was not much different than himself in the physical sense but he seemed too familiar to Kovu. He looked down at the coconut in his hand. "You want it back?" He spoke lowly as he kept his head down but moving his eyes back up to see the man.

Simba had heard it before. The rebel-types who claimed they didn't need help, that they could make it on their own. He knew they were the ones who needed help the most. Still, Simba wasn't going to force it on him. Simba had a way of dealing with those in the Fields like this. For the most part, his way had worked. He looked at the young man for a moment, then nodded before he spoke. "I suppose you don't," he said calmly and cool. "You seem quite good at what you do. It was by chance that I caught you. Keep up the good work, and I'm sure one day you'll make a fine profession out of thievery." Yes, it was a bit sarcastic, but maybe it would make the boy think. Simba did drop the sarcasm and exchanged it for sincerity when Kovu asked if he wanted it back. Simba sighed and shook his head. "If you need food, it's not my place to take it from you," he said. "I know things are a bit tough under the reign of our queen. I know not everyone is fortunate. Do you have a family that needs food as well? If you won't accept my help, perhaps they might?"KOVU JACQUES ASSEMBÉ

If Kovu bothered to listen to the feelings he received when speaking to Kiara or this man before him, he would realize that they were important. Of course Kovu didn't listen to that part of him because he didn't care about learning who he once was. What was the point of it? He'd much rather start over. Sure this man was familiar but not in the sense that Kiara was. He received no warm feeling from within. Instead he felt a sense of ambivalence.
Here he thought the man was going to scold him for taking the coconut but instead he complimented him. Kovu kept his eyes on him as he raised his head to normal level. His eyes fluttered back in forth as he read the man's face.
The young man narrowed his eyes, it took him a minute to pick up on the sarcasm in his voice. Kovu, as if trying to embody Scar, shined an amused smile on his face as he took a step backwards.
"Here, take it. I don't need it." Kovu tossed the coconut to the man with a small amount of force, he had plenty of other stolen foods in his bag to keep his hunger at bay. He took another step backwards as he side swept the man's questions. The man didn't need to know of his family and he would surely regret it if he did.
"You don't want to hear of my family, sir."

Simba felt uneasy when he saw the wicked smile on the young man's face. There was something about him. Something dark. Simba was beginning to see less of a young man who needed help and more of one who had cruel deeds on the brain. Was he stealing out of spite... or was there something more to it? Was he a threat to the Fields. Simba couldn't have that. Simba caught the coconut when the boy threw it back. There was no point in arguing with him over it. If he was as wicked as his facial expression was letting on, he was probably telling the truth. The fact that he next told Simba that the older man didn't want to hear of his family didn't help matters. "Look, here's the deal," he said. "I am Community Leader of the Fields. I have a family and a community that I am responsible for. I must think of them first. I'll make this as clear as I can to you. If you or any of your family need assistance in any way, I welcome you to come to us. We will see what we can do for you. However, if you are strictly entering this area to cause trouble, then I will not hesitate to retaliate. This place will not become a dangerous one to live in."KOVU JACQUES ASSEMBÉ

He was refined in manners and that bothered Kovu. Clearly this man was too nice. No nice wasn't the correct word for what this man was but Kovu couldn't place a better word. The longer he stood in front of him the more antsy he was to get home but he couldn't let this man know where he lived. That would be a poor decision on Kou's behalf.
On the other hand, his curiosity was being peaked. "You think stealing a coconut is trouble?" He raised a brow as he tilted his chin in towards his chest. Luckily this man only knew of the coconut and not the dozen cobs of corn in his bag along with fruits from the trees. Kovu chuckled deeply and simply smiled. "I assure you," Kovu lowered his shoulder and tilted his head. "I am no trouble. I am the last person you need to worry about."
His words trailed off when it finally registered.
Community Leader. It finally hit him. This man was in charge of the fields, the very fields Kiara was training to take over. Kovu stopped, dropping his tough guy act and looking to the grass. This guy knew Kiara, he was her boss in a sense. Kiara had recently met Kovu's boss and now here Kovu was in front of her's. His eyes fluttered back up to the man in front of him.
"Who are you?"

Of course Simba didn't think stealing a coconut was going to be overly harmful. That wasn't what he was trying to tell the young man. He looked at the thief sharply, but not coldly. There was still that gleam in his eyes of one who trying to aid the boy. "I doubt our community will suffer at the loss of a few coconuts," he said. "However, if the stealing continues and people find they have to worry about their possessions because they have discovered a thief is present, there will be problems. There will be paranoia and unrest, and the community will cease to function smoothly. That is what I think would be 'trouble'."Simba then sighed when the young man said that he would not be trouble. Simba wanted to believe him, but he hadn't really helped his case by stealing to begin with. "If you feel you won't be trouble, then you can prove it to me by ceasing to steal from us," he said. "For now I am willing to give you the coconut... and the the rest of the stolen food in your bag as an act of kindness. I suggest you accept it and consider my advice in the future." Yes, Simba knew about the other food. He doubted the thief would have had gone to so much trouble for a coconut. "I'm Simba Pride," he said. "And you are?"KOVU JACQUES ASSEMBÉ

Kovu was sure this man meant well. The young man wasn't going to stop taking food nor was he going to ask for help from this man. When the man brought up the idea of stealing people's possessions Kovu gave him a hurt look.
The young man listened to him despite his difference in opinion. He lowered his brows at the man, "Stealing a person's possessions is petty. Food is different." Kovu's jaw tightened as he continued to search the man's face, he had yet to show any sign of anger. This whole time this man was showing signs of forgiveness but with a stern hand. He began to wonder if it was just best to agree to this man's help than to continue on like this. Then Rehema would find out, I mean, he always found out things and this was just another thing he wouldn't want him to know.
This man was sharp but he didn't get the feeling he was as sharp as Rehema. Kovu moved the bottom of his jaw to the right as his tongue rolled over his left moler. He held a soft smile on his face as he chuckled. "Of course you know about the bag," He spoke softly as he quickly raised his eyebrows before lowering them again. Never underestimate someone.
Kovu's smile died as the man finally introduced himself and it dawn on him that he wasn't just Kiara's boss. Pride. He was her father. Kovu was standing face to face with her father. He opened his mouth and slowly shut it as he gulped. How was he to get himself out of this one?
"I'm no one, sir." His words covered in regret.

Simba was glad to hear that the young man had some honor. He could understand how one would steal food to feed a hungry family, and that such an act was noble to an extent. But usually that was when the person who originally had the food was corrupt and keeping those who needed it from having it. Simba was not like that. "I'm glad to hear you don't wish to steal things outside of food," he said. "However, the people in my community might still misunderstand what you are doing. In many's eyes, theft is theft. And again, I'm more than willing to share the food with you and those you are with. We have plenty and it is always distributed to those in need."If the young man did think Simba was some sort of corrupt leader, he wanted that idea taken out of his head as soon as possible. Simba nodded about the bag. "You wouldn't go to so much trouble for a few coconuts, would you?" he asked. Simba then felt sorry for the young man when he called himself "no one." This answered a lot of questions. Something had happened to this one, something that made him give up hope. So he resorted to crime... possibly manipulated by another. "You're someone," he said. "You simply need to find out who that is again." Simba then thought a moment. "I'll make you a deal. We forget what happened here today if you come and work with me on our current community project. You'll have food, a room, and I'll even pay you. Perhaps you can find out who you are again then."KOVU JACQUES ASSEMBÉ

In Rehema's group, Kovu wasn't the one who stole things from people. No there were members lower down on the totem pole that did that for Rehema. Kovu was sort of his right hand man, his little prodigue in a way. Taking food was just something Kovu did to get by but he was clearly going to have to change his schedule thanks to Simba.
Kovu wanted to backpedal out of this, redo his day so this never happened. This was definitely not how he wanted to meet Simba and if he had any chance with Kiara this was going to come back to bite him in the butt. He'd have to spin this in a positive way somehow.
This man had too much hope in Kovu but maybe he could take advantage of this. He cleared his throat and smiled lightly, "Thank you, sir." Kovu made sure to give him a nice smile, nothing menacing about it in hopes to change the mood.
"Yea, I could have skipped the coconut." Kovu chuckled as he loosened his grip on his bag. He slowly looked up and gave the man eye contact, it became clearer and clearer to him that he was Kiara's father.
You're someone. You simply need to find out who that is again.
"I know who I am." Kovu spoke firmly but without any threat in his voice. "Besides,"
Kovu could work for this man, be in the fields and act so kind to him. He could play along and pretend to be good. It would be all too easy for him. There was only one thing wrong with it and it was his daughter. Kovu couldn't lie to her.
"I can't do that." Kovu admitted, "I have a job.. And a home." Simba didn't have to know it wasn't really his home and that he was a squatter. "But thank you, sir."

Simba studied the young man. He was trying to see what he could make of him, but something stopped him. This told him something. The boy was clever. Whether that cleverness was a good or bad thing was yet to be determined. Simba hoped for the best. "You're welcome, and like I said, if you need more, simply ask next time," said Simba. He hoped that advice would work. He didn't think the young man a fool, and only a fool would try to steal again after being given the option to ask for aid. Simba nodded again as the young an spoke of the coconut. He then noticed how the young man looked at him. It was like he knew Simba... or had known of him before now. "Out of curiosity, have you and I met before?" he asked. "You seem... well again just curious."The young man said he knew who he was, but Simba still doubted him after he said he was a nobody. Again, he was so hard to figure out. And Simba was surprised when he turned down the job. He sighed and nodded again. "Fair enough," he said. "The offer is there if you change your mind." Simba then turned and began to walk away before turning back. He had a fair, but very firm look in his eyes. "The next time we meet, I want to be able to greet you in a much more pleasant manner than this time."

Kovu was itching to get home. He was itching to get away for Simba, really. With how things were between him and Kiara, he wasn't sure how to act towards this man. He thanked him for offering him a job and a place to stay and had this been a few months ago, Kovu would be pledging allegiance to this man instead of Scar.
Maybe Simba was right, he could simply ask for the food next time but Kovu wasn't one to ask for help. Right now it was best that Kovu steered clear of this man until he knew what to do with Kiara. Simba asked if they had met before and Kovu paused. Should he even mention his daughter? No. That wasn't a good idea.
"No." He said, realizing how quickly he said it once it came out. "No, I don't think we have." Kovu recovered with a calmer voice. Politely, Simba extended the offer, telling him the offer was still good down the road. Kovu was sure Scar wouldn't be happy with him missing training to work for this man but a part of Kovu wanted too. It wasn't to just be closer to Kiara. Something deep down was telling him it was a good idea but he simply shook it off.
"Thank you." He nodded in responce as he watched as the Community Leader walked away. He too hoped their next exchange was better than their first. A lot better.
