and always will. Life in Wonderland was rather easy, well at least for Wendy Princeton is was. Maybe because she had an older brother to look out for her or because she had stories to tell the younger kids, but she was young enough that the hard times were yet to come, even if she was twenty-two. Wendy usually spent most of her time in the Library, helping out around the place and even telling stories or reading them to the younger children and they all listened with fascination. But as soon as she was done she usually just stuck around until her brother wanted her home, but sometimes…just sometimes that didn’t happen. She was known to run off and have adventures through Wonderland with her partners in crime, John and James. Of course her brother did not like this, maybe because he always worried about her safety and he was just playing the part of older brother, but sometimes Wendy felt like she was being smothered and whenever James came around with a new adventure, the young Wendy jumped at the idea, and one of those times were today.
She was putting away a few books, the time that she was supposed to be home was closing in and of course that was when James Fox had shown up, her partner-in-crime, and when he showed up that meant he had found something worth the adventure and he had. Together the two and run to get John Banning and the three of them went on an adventure. Of course the time was running against them and they needed to return home, Wendy knew that when she arrived home that she would be scolded for not returning back to the house when she was supposed to. But what surprised her the most was as she walked the path back to her home, walking past the old library, her brother was walking out. She held her breath when he noticed her before slowly walking over towards him.
“Kit…I was just on my way home.” she lied, looking down at the stains on her blue dress, she brushed herself off once more before looking up at her brother with a small sheepish smile. Boy was she in trouble.

[googlefont="Open Sans Condensed:300"] TIME TO GROW UP [attr="class","next"]He worried too much. That’s what Kit told himself as he sat, staring into the small fire he had built in his fireplace. He was worried for no reason. Wendy was going to come back and she was going to be perfectly fine — she always was. This was just another one of her stunts. Kit leaned back and grabbed the bottle of whiskey that he had picked up from the bar and poured it into one of the glass cups nearby before he took a swig of it. She was only a few years younger than him, but sometimes she could act like she was still a little girl. Kit wondered how he had put up with her before five months ago. Had she always been like this? He stood up, downing the rest of his drink and grabbed his jacket. Five hours was enough. Five hours was five too many, he thought as he walked out of the building, determined to go and make sure that she was alright. He headed for the library first — it was where he normally could find her. Caught up in a book or telling stories to the young ones, but today, she was missing. The woman at the front said that she had been gone all afternoon and she hadn’t seen her. Which could only mean one thing: She had gotten mixed up with those boys again. “On your way home?” Kit looked down at her dress, at the smudges of dirt of her face and he knew. He knew that she had been out with those damn boys again getting herself into trouble. He didn’t know what to say — there was so much anger in him that he thought he would explode at her if he didn’t take a deep breath. He reached up and drug his hand down his face in exasperation before he turned away from her. He didn’t want to look at her right now, “You’re reckless Wendy.” He finally managed, after a prolonged silence. He turned and began walking back toward their home, expecting her to follow. He shoved his hands into the pockets of his jacket as he walked up the path toward the house that was near the edge of the Village, “Where were you? Out with John and James again? You don't think you could have at least let me know so I didn't sit up waiting for you?” His brow was furrowed and he still didn’t look at her — he couldn’t risk yelling at her out here where the whole town would see. It wasn’t their business what happened between him and his younger sister.

and always will. ‘On your way home?’
Wendy stood tall and bold, still as a porcelain doll as her brother looked at the dirt that was on the bottom of her dress and then his gaze flickered up to her face. Her hand slowly raised and wiped at her cheek, smudges of dirt coming off against her thumb. She slipped her hand away from her face and held her chin high. She could see the disappointment and slight rage deep within the hues of his eyes, but in a way she was use to the disappointment. She didn’t show any phase of emotions upon her face, knowing what was to come next. And then he turned away from her, her face fell knowing that this time seemed to take it too far…but she always did this, shouldn’t he be use to her ways by now? The silence fell around them before he finally talked, she was taken aback, never before had he called her reckless. Before she could speak, to rest her case and defend herself but just as she opened her mouth to say her words as carefully as possible, he started walking away. Her eyes widened slightly and then her feet started to move on their own accord.
‘Where were you? Out with John and James again? You don’t think you could have a least let me know so I didn’t sit up waiting for you?’
She grasped her hands in front of her, eyes casting down and shadowed over. They were getting closer to their house and she knew that the worst of the scolding was yet to come. Her feet crunched against the path before she finally spoke “Yes I was with them. I am always with them. Plus, Kit, you don’t have to worry about me…I am old enough to take care of myself.” she said her voice laced with truth and confidence. She was twenty-two after all; she was old enough that she didn’t need Kit watching her and leaning over her shoulder in worry all the time.

[googlefont="Open Sans Condensed:300"] TIME TO GROW UP [attr="class","next"]He could hear the sound of her footfall behind him, letting him know that she was indeed coming home this time. It was exhausting for Kit to take care of a younger sister. They didn’t have parents, they didn’t have other relatives, it was just the two of them…and quite frankly the rest of the village. With Kit acting as the leader of the small village that had formed, he had enough on his plate. Worrying about Wendy was just a little too much icing on his cake. He knew he should cut her some slack because she was indeed old enough, but somehow he would always see her as that reckless thirteen year old who needed to be shown the way. She would always be his darling Wendy. “Old enough to take care of yourself? You’re only twenty-two, Wendy!” Kit reached up to pinch the bridge of his nose, frustration beginning to take its toll on his countenance. He didn’t want to turn around — he knew what he would see. Her and those bright eyes begging for his forgiveness. But the lack of sleep and anxiousness had already taken its toll on Kit Princeton. “I don’t think you should hang around them any more.” Kit said as he climbed the pathway toward their small cottage. His eyes stung with lack of sleep. “Do you know —“ He had begun to raise his voice again and immediately lowered it when he finally turned around. “Do you know how exhausting it is to have to look after you and an entire village full of people? Everyone’s looking to me for guidance and my little sister can’t even set a good example.” His voice was low, almost a whisper, but not quite. Just enough where she could sense the annoyance and frustration that he was experiencing. “Your actions aren’t only just on you. A Princeton trouncing around in the mud.” He was exasperated now and turned away, resuming the climb back home. When he finally reached the door, he pushed it open and waited there expectantly for his little sister to come inside.

and always will. Wendy had always been a good child at least that was what she thought and believed about herself. Sure she had some tendencies to not like rules and growing up, but did that really make her the little kid she once was in the eyes of her older brother? Sure he was older and sure she was only twenty-two… but didn’t he have the freedom to do as he pleased at that age? Most likely. Why? Because he was the oldest, because he was more mature. And what was she? The rebellious young adult, one that need to be watched over, to have her older brother breathing down her neck. Ever since their parents died it seemed like she was living in confinement, needing to be watched twenty-four seven.
‘Old enough to take care of yourself? You’re only twenty-two, Wendy!’
Her gaze flickered to the back of his head, hurt flashing in her features. He didn’t think that she could take care of herself. “Kit…please I’m sorry. It won’t happen again.” she said but in her mind she meant it…but would she live by it? Wendy was known to keep her promises, always had, but these two people…James and John…were her only friends. What did Kit expect her to do? Not hang out with them anymore? To find new friends? And that was exactly what he said, that he didn’t want her to hang out with them. She was shell shocked, her mouth opened as she stooped just before the small cottage in which they lived. Just as she noticed he was turning around, her mouth snapped shut.
‘Do you know how exhausting it is to have to look after you and an entire village full of people? Everyone’s looking to me for guidance and my little sister can’t even set a good example. Your actions aren’t only just on you. A Princeton trouncing around in the mud.’
She could see and feel the annoyance and frustration coming off him in waves. It made her want to shrink back to her childlike self and disappear. But she couldn’t. She was old enough that she could be brave. So with a new confidence and annoyance of her own she walked inside their home as he pushed it open and waited for her to enter. She turned to him “Fine. You want me to set an example? I will.” she snapped at him angrily, tears brimming her eyes as she stormed away from him. If he followed her to try and talk, she would most likely blow up.

[googlefont="Open Sans Condensed:300"] TIME TO GROW UP [attr="class","next"] She had promised that it wouldn’t happen again, but with Wendy, that sometimes felt like a idle promise. How much truth could there possibly be in the 22-year-old’s words? She was constantly off with Peter or James causing trouble. This was just another in a long list of many. Kit was hard on her — but how else could he be? She didn’t have parents in Wonderland, neither of them did. All they had was each other. Kit ran his hand through his red hair, trying to get his bearings. He knew that he should go after her, but there was a part of him that felt the mounting frustration that seemed to follow her around like a gloomy cloud. Did he really want to subject himself to that? Just the same, he inhaled deeply and then followed her into the house. She was on her little tirade through the house, he could tell by the way she was practically stomping her feet against the floor. This was going really well, he thought sarcastically. Why couldn’t they have been blessed with a set of parents to watch over the pair of them? Or at least Wendy?! “Wendy. Wendy, c’mon.” He said, his voice full of apology. He had gone too far and he had realized that. All that was left to do was to make sure that his little sister didn’t stay mad at him. “Please come back. We’ll talk about this,” Kit said as he walked after her. She was storming off and he knew what that meant. He had touched a nerve. Sometimes his frustrations got the better of him. “Like adults.” He added as he stopped at the staircase and looked up into the darkened hallway. Kit forced himself to shake his head, “I’m sorry. Alright?” He had done her wrong and now he wanted to offer her the rightful apology. Turning, her leaned against the wall that was adjacent to the stairwell. “I don’t know how to do this Wendy. I don’t know how to be your brother and your parent and the leader of this village. Is that what you want to hear?” He asked, squeezing his eyes shut momentarily before opening them and taking the stairs two at a time and knocking twice on her door. He didn't know how to wear so many hats...perhaps he wasn't even fit to wear any of them. Sometimes that certainly felt like the case.

and always will. The fury coming from Wendy’s pores was like molten lava, she would eventually cool down but until then she felt like she needed to scream and throw everything. But she refrained as she stormed through the house, the urge to smash glass and items running through her veins but instead she slammed her feet into the ground…loudly. She could hear her brother, he was trying to get her to go back, to talk it out with him, even adding the idea of talking like adults but she was already heading up the steps.
‘I’m sorry, alright? I don’t know how to do this Wendy. I don’t know how to be your brother and your parent and the leader of this village. Is that what you want to hear?’
She stormed into her room, slamming it shut behind her, his words echoing in her mind. She pushed her hands against the wall, putting her head against it, the coolness slowly calming her down, but was it enough? She took deep breaths. In, out, in, out. She felt her heart beat slowly begin to calm down, the thumping within her chest no longer pounding. She spun around, her back hitting the door and she sunk down to the ground. What did she say to him?
Swallowing she spoke. “Why can’t you just be my brother?” she asked loud enough that it echoed in her room and slipped under the door crack, “Just be an older brother, a leader…I don’t want you to replace our parents…I just want my brother. I want the person that can trust me…that won’t control me.” she said rather softly but she was sure that he could still hear her.

[googlefont="Open Sans Condensed:300"] TIME TO GROW UP [attr="class","next"] Kit wasn’t sure what to do. Honestly, even after their entire lives in Wonderland, he hadn’t quite figured out Wendy. Sure, they had been siblings for forever — but sometimes it felt like he was trying to learn how to do everything anew. Sometimes it felt like he was starting over. Sometimes it felt like they weren’t even really related. He shook his head, trying to break that train of thought. She was his sister — that was that. It was quiet for a few minutes. He was on the bottom floor, she on the top and there seemed like miles between them. But then he heard her voice. Faint, but just loud enough that he could make out what she was saying. “Because I can’t just be your brother!” He didn’t know how else to explain it — but if he wore the simplicity of just one hat then he was afraid that he couldn’t be entirely himself. He was her brother and the village leader, but he had obligations and the obligations often conflicted in his mind. Perhaps that was what she was talking about. Could he learn to take off the other hats when nit was just the two of them? Could he be just her brother? Slowly, Kit started going up the stairs. Her door was closed, but he could still hear her — she was just loud enough. He was hard on her. He imagined that he always had been. Sighing, he leaned against the wall and finally sank down on the floor so he was sitting next to her door. He pinched the bridge of his nose. “I don’t even remember what mom and dad were like, Wendy.” There was a pause in his words before he picked them back up again. “I do trust you.” He was starting to loosen up — trying to make sense of everything. He couldn’t control her as much as he wanted to. “You’re an adult. I get it, I do.” He stopped again. “I’m sorry, Wendy.”It was time for him to be honest and tell her exactly what it was that was bothering him. He was a worried older brother. “I just worry that if I don’t protect you, no one else will.”

this belongs to you, and it always will. Her eyes were closed; she waited for him to speak, for him to say anything…to say something. But she knew he was letting her words sink in, going to his heart and piercing it. His words, the words that he didn’t even remember their parents, slapped her heard. Who didn’t remember their parents? But then she thought about it…did she remember them? She couldn’t remember a voice, couldn’t remember anything about them, and couldn’t remember what they looked like. Was she too losing sight of the parents they once had. It was like one of her stories, where the hero had forgotten his family until someone reminded him of it. But with Kit not remembering them much, Wendy had no shot of it. She swallowed deeply, but his words of trust and apology brought her back to the present. To the moment and their conversation. “I forgive you.” Those words were whispered from her lips, her eyes slowly fluttering open as she moved to stand up, slowly her door clicked and then she was moving out from behind it just as his words hit her. ‘I just worry that if I don’t protect you, no one else will.’Wendy shook her head, “Kit.” she breathed looking down at his figure that was seated next to her door. She slowly sunk down to her knees, grasping his hands within her own. “If I promise to not hang out with James and John again…will you stop worrying? Because I know you’re trying to protect me, and I love you for that…but you are smothering me.” she said, a small smile gracing her lips as a little laugh left through her lips.
