Rapunzel was born to the king and queen of Corona, the two had desperately wished for a child. while her mother was pregnant, she fell extremely ill. They feared the loss of the Queen and Rapunzel so the King sent out men to find the mystical flower that was created by a single drop of sunlight that would heal the illness. They found it and brought it back to the Queen. She ingested it in medicine and she was healed.

One night a mysterious woman broke into the castle after Rapunzel was born. She sang the song to the child with golden hair and her hair started to glow. She discovered that the child’s hair retained the healing powers of the flower. The woman attempted to cut a piece of the hair off but the hair turned brunette and the woman took the child and raised her as her own daughter. Mother Gothel kept Rapunzel locked up in a tower to protect her hair. She warned Rapunzel of the dangers of the outside world and of the selfish people who would steal her hair to keep Rapunzel from leaving the tower. To honor the lost princess, the kingdom released paper lanterns into the night sky on her birthday in hopes that she would return to them.

18 years later, Rapunzel is all grown up and is desperate to see the outside world. When Mother Gothel comes to see her, she sings the song for her then asks, very nervously, if she could go see the lanterns on her birthday. Mother Gothel says that the world is too dangerous for someone as naïve and gullible as her and she requests that Rapunzel never asks her to leave the tower again. Rapunzel promises and helps Gothel leave.
