Sometimes when the night was still and the moon was clear she could hear the distant sound of metal hitting against metal. Last night she had stayed up late wondering what or who could make that noise.
Today she decided to find out. She had made some jam and bread that she had in a basket on her arm. When going to meet someone new it was always a good idea to bring a peace offering.
The woods were peaceful with the birds chirping. Their songs brought a smile to her face and spring to her step. She spun as she walked, dancing to the tuneless song.
A house rose through the trees as she danced closer. Smoothing out her dress and straightening the basket on her arm, she strode forward, ready to meet her neighbor.
Her knock rang through the house. As soon as she knocked she heard the same metallic ringing from the earlier nights, and it was coming from behind the house.
She peeked around the corner, her hair falling over her shoulder. She could just go...check it out. That would be fine, right?
She walked forward hesitantly, craning her head forward. All the tools of blacksmith were displayed on the wall of a covered area just a few yards away from the house. And in the center over a large anvil was a young woman.
"Uh... Excuse me?" she said rather loudly, if only so the girl could hear it over the clanging of her hammer.
