Evelyn had a number of reasons for holding this Masquerade Ball. For one, she wanted to get into the good graces of the people. She had heard that several had not spoke so highly of her around Wonderland. There complaints about the laws and some of the taxes. The Queen wanted the people to love her... trust her. She wanted them in the palm of her hands without them being so out of fear. That's how she ruled before, and that plan failed.
She also wanted to know her subjects a good bit more. Find out who could benefit her and who were legitimate threats to her reign. She already had a few of them under her thumb, those like the bank president Vincent Rattshire. But that wasn't enough. She needed far more in case there should be an uprising.
For now, it was time to address her people. Standing on a balcony above the dance floor, she smiled at the crowd who had showed up.
"Greetings, good citizens of Wonderland!" she said. "I am honored and humbled that so many have come to my little ball tonight. Eat, drink, delight in each others' company. Make memories this night, for what do we truly have to cherish if we don't have memories." Evelyn blew a kiss to them and then turned. Let them enjoy themselves. She would do so as well tonight.
