Belle looked up at the funny-faced clock on her wall. Less than a half hour until the shop was to close. Unlike some who were often anxious to close up shop and call it a day, Belle always dreaded closing time. She loved running the bookshop and helping the variety of customers that came in. Not as many visited her shop as they did other shops, but a variety still came and went nonetheless. Belle sighed and shrugged her cat, Aesop, who sat on the counter.
"Well I suppose I should a bit of last minute tidying up," she said. She was really going to do the same routine dusting and wiping down that she always did. Then perhaps one last cup of tea before she collected Aesop and the current book she was reading and made her way home. She wanted to deny that she was tired, but the yawn that came out of her mouth told her differently. Nevertheless, she went to work. There was really little to do as she kept the shop clean in a regular basis.
She looked at the clock again. Less than ten more minutes. Belle looked outside to see if anyone was coming towards the shop. She was more than happy to help a last-minute customer. No one though. She turned back to Aesop.
"Hmmm, guess I'll have that cup of tea now," she said.

don't let it show. The cool weather outside was growing cooler and cooler, ever since her stroll through the woods that resulted into running into two different people had her just wanting to get home, back to her sister Anna in their little home in Wonderland. Ever since their parents died, Elsa being the oldest took care of them both, except that she had yet to find herself a place of work to bring home money, but the good thing was that they seemed to have money on them because of their parents will. Their parents had bene rather wealthy before their death and had left much of their money to the two girls but Elsa and Anna rarely spent it, wanting to savory the money and only use it when it was needed.
The young pale blonde walked along the path back from the local forest, the underbrush so green and prickly from the passing storm of cold brushed against the flesh of her pale hands, the cold coming from it and slipping through her pale blue gloves. Elsa had put them on not too long ago, when she had met the man in the Information building and yet she had kept them on, why? Because they were a comfort, a way to remember her parents, it had been a birthday present from her parents when she was younger, years before they past. But she had always felt like it had been for another reason, yet she could not put her hand on it. What was it that she was forgetting, she remembered pretty much everything but yet her past was blurry, why? What was going on that she couldn’t remember the past as clearly as she could remember the present?
She sighed, letting out the frustrations of the past that weighted deep against her heart and continued her walk back home, that was before a bookstore, one that she over looked many times caught her eye. The hue from within signaled that the place was open and her curiosity got the best of her, slowly she slipped towards it pulling open the oak door and entered the warmly light place. Her eyes glanced around, raking over the dusty old books. She glanced around, no one in sight before she called out into the emptiness.
“Hello?”

It was about five minutes before close, perhaps less, when Belle heard the hello. Not expecting it, she almost spilled her cup of tea. She caught it in time though. That was definitely a good thing as she had already chipped another cup. She kept the cup though. For some reason, she thought it looked cute.
Aesop hopped up on the counter and looked at the person who just entered. Belle then stepped over and smiled at the girl. Her eyes clearly showed that she was happy that someone had come in. If the girl wanted to stay after closing time, she was welcomed to. Belle always welcomed people to do that. Belle couldn't help but notice that the girl seemed like she needed help with something other than books. The girl looked quite distraught.
"Hello, I'm Belle," she said. "Welcome to my bookshop." She then chuckled as her cat meowed. "Oh, and this is Aesop. What can I help you with?" She then looked down at her cup. "I was just treating myself to some tea. Would you like some?"

don't let it show. Elsa looked around, fingers running across books as she passed them, she flicked on open and looked through the warn pages, the smell of books hitting her nose. She wasn’t much of a reader, well not from what she could remember. Over the past few months she hadn’t touched one book. The only things she seemed to do was work her shift at the ice cream shop and walk around outside to think. She liked the coldness of the ice cream and the store and she liked the isolation of the walks she took to think. It was just two things that she enjoyed, that she loved, isolation and cold.
‘Hello, I’m Belle. Welcome to my bookshop. Oh, and this is Aesop. What can I help you with?’
She spun around at the voice that spoke from behind her; she nodded her head “Elsa.” she introduced herself before her attention flashed to the cat that meowed, she smiled at the little creature before her eyes turned back to Belle. “I was just looking around, but if I do need help I will let you know.” she said her tone polite. When the woman asked if she wanted some tea, she was tempted to say no, to say that she was should get home but she refrained from doing so. If she kept herself isolated from people she would turn into herself, turn cold and distant. A part of her didn’t want that but the feeling of cold and distance felt familiar, it stirred within her but it was gone just like that. She plastered on a small smile.
“I would love some.”

Belle smiled at the girl's name. She always liked the name Elsa. There was something unique and brilliant about it. It was sort of a royal name in a way. At least she thought so.
"Well it's lovely to meet you, Elsa," she said. "And yes, any questions at all, I will be glad to assist you." Aesop sat and watched as Belle went to pour some tea. The cat was anything but hostile, but he was a cat and therefore curious. He enjoyed watching people as they shopped. Humans fascinated him.
Belle stepped over and handed her a cup of tea. She of course wanted to play the role of bookshop owner, but she was always interested in making new friends and learning about others. She decided to begin with small talk.
"We have some lovely art books that have just come in," she said. "I'm not quite certain of where the art is from. The book seems very vague on it, but the scenes are just breathtaking. I've always wanted to see different places." Had she ever been outside Wonderland? She felt she had, but didn't recall when or where.

don't let it show. ‘Well it’s lovely to meet you, Elsa. And yes, any questions at all, I will be glad to assist you.’
Elsa forced a smile upon her face, a form of thank you as she nodded her head. “You have quite a collection here.” she mused looking around at all the books that surrounded them in the bookstore. They ranged from all genres and sizes and filled the room with its knowledge that was yet to be unearthed. Elsa couldn’t remember the last time that her hands, pale and cold, had touched the fine leather and crinkled pages of a book and actually sat down and read. She frowned trying to remember but it never came into a picture within her mind and soon the frown disappeared as the woman gave her a porcelain cup filled with warm liquid. She smiled taking the cup gently with delicate pale fingers. “Thank you.” she breathed as she brought the cool cup to her lips and took a tiny sip, it was rather warm but not hot enough to burn her tongue.
‘We have some lovely art books that have just come in. I’m not quite certain of where the art is from. The book seems very vague on it, but the scenes are just breathtaking. I’ve always wanted to see different places.’
A small smile appeared on Elsa’s lip, she held pity within her. Swallowing the tea that was still in her mouth she slowly placed the glass cup onto a wooden surface before speaking. “Why don’t you? See other places I mean, nothing is holding you back.”

Belle smiled when Elsa complimented her about her collection. Belle wished she could take credit for them, but the fact was that she was getting all the books from some source that had never quite revealed himself or herself. Whoever sent them seemed to know what Belle liked and what others who came into her shop liked. She supposed she couldn't complain about that part. Still, she like to know where they came from, along with other things. She didn't even recall how she came to own a bookshop. She... just did.
"It is quite a collection, isn't it?" she said. "Someone's been most kind in delivering them to me free of charge. I suppose I wouldn't have this bookshop without that person." She then nodded when Elsa thanked her for the tea. "You're quite welcome. I do enjoy a good tea. If you'd ever like to come in the afternoon, we can have cakes and sandwiches as well."
When Elsa asked her why she couldn't see other places, Belle found herself confused. Why couldn't she? What was holding her back? The unfortunate thing was that SOMETHING was holding her back. Something was keeping her in Wonderland, in the village.
"I honestly don't know," she said to Elsa. "If I could, I would go in a heartbeat... but I can't... and I can't explain why."

Elsa smiled a polite smile, one that she used many times so that people didn’t always see her cold facade. “I would enjoy that.” she told Belle, her eyes holding the truth. She of course would enjoy that. Even if she liked isolation didn’t mean that company was always that bad but sometimes she found herself wondering why isolation and cold fronts were better for her. Why couldn’t she be as life like and excited like her sister? Something had happened to her before five months, she just couldn’t remember what.
‘I honestly don’t know. If I could, I would go in a heartbeat…but I can’t…and I can’t explain why.’
Elsa frowned lightly “Well that is weird. Have you…tried leaving?” she questioned with a tilt of her head. Of course she should ask herself the same thing. Had she tried leaving? Has anyone in Wonderland tried leaving?

Belle smiled when Elsa said that she would like to come by for cakes and sandwiches. Often it was just Belle and her cat. She would love to have company for lunch. They could chat about anything, and of course ask questions. Belle was intrigued about other people's lives, even if everyone she knew came from the same place. Everyone had a story... and she loved stories.
"Excellent," she said. "I eat lunch at noon and dinner around six o'clock. Please come by any day."
Belle sighed when Elsa asked if she had tried leaving. She also blushed a bit. While she had made an effort, she had stopped dead in her tracks at the Hall of Doors.
"I believe the Hall of Doors is the way to leave, but... I've heard the stories," she said. "It is said that people have died trying to go through them. I'm not ready to take such a risk in spite of my desire to leave." She then gave Elsa a hopefully look. "Do you know of another way?" Since Elsa had found it strange that Belle didn't know of a way,... perhaps her new friend did. And if Elsa did... oh the thought was wonderful... though perhaps a bit too wonderful.

Elsa nodded her head a smile “I will. I actually work at the ice cream shop, but maybe during one of my breaks I will stop by for those cakes and sandwiches.” she said. Elsa wasn’t one to make friends quickly, but right now she could see that Belle was rather genuine and she thought that maybe one day the two could become friends. Perhaps. But then as Elsa thought about it, did she actually want friends? She feared hurting them…but how could she possibly hurt them? It didn’t make sense. Something was missing, and it had to do with only remembering the last five months, it had to be. It was something itching at her subconscious something wishing to be brought to the light but she couldn’t reach it. She was shaken from her thoughts by Belle’s next spoken words.
‘I believe the Hall of Doors is the way to leave, but…I’ve heard the stories. It is said that people have died trying to go through them. I'm not ready to take such a risk in spite of my desire to leave. Do you know of another way?’
Elsa shook her head “I do not. But that does not mean there isn’t a place that is like the Hall of Doors.” she said.

Belle smiled a bit when Elsa mentioned she worked at the ice cream shop.
"Oh, I've heard wonderful things about that shop, and I do enjoy a good bowl of ice cream," she said. "Unfortunately I haven't had time to go over there with my own shop and all." Wait a minute... had she ever had ice cream. She must have if she seemed to like it so much. She knew she wasn't lying though. She did like ice cream! Stranger and stranger. "I must drop by there now though. After all, my new friend works there, doesn't she?" She smiled warmly at Elsa. "And again, you are always welcomed here whenever you are able to come over."
A place like the Hall of Doors? Another way out? The idea very much intrigued her. But could it be true? In a way, Belle felt there had to be. Wonderland couldn't be Wonderland forever after all. It had to end in every direction.
"There must be... there must be!" she said. She then blushed just a bit at her voice raising. "And someone here must know." She then looked around at the books. "Or better yet... perhaps there is a book that could tell us something."

Being referred to as a friend had Elsa slightly taken aback, from what she could remember the only friend she had was her sister. And in a way that was how she liked things. Simple and isolated. Sure her sister broke her isolated state every once in a while, but she was okay by that. She smiled “Yes you must now.” she said quickly agreeing with the woman before her.
‘There must be…there must be! And someone here must know. Or better yet…perhaps there is a book that could tell us something.'
“Us?” she questioned, her faces and tone stating that she didn’t think she heard the woman right. “I mean sure I am curious to know if there is another place out…but…” she trailed off not sure what she was getting at. She shook her head “Never mind.” she muttered.

Belle smiled about the need to go and visit Elsa's ice cream shop. She really needed to go to a number of places and meet more people. Elsa's shop was as good a place to start as any in her mind. She decided she would make a point to do it the following day. She doubted closing down the shop for an hour in the afternoon would hurt business.
"Tomorrow then," she said. "Noon. And that is a promise. I cannot wait to try the ice cream." She smiled warmly at Elsa. It was nice to make new friends, and Elsa seemed to be very noble-hearted.
Belle felt a tad embarrassed when Elsa seemed confused about the "Us" part. Perhaps Belle should have thought before saying such a thing. She sighed.
"I'm terribly sorry," she said. "I was simply thinking that perhaps you might have needed help with something too, that perhaps your memories might be a bit befuddled as mine are. Forgive me, Elsa. It was in incredibly poor taste for me to make assumptions about you." She sighed again as she tried to look around for a book. She found nothing though. Just the same types of books she was used to seeing there.

A smile slowly appeared on the young blonde girl’s face. Nodding her head “I’ll be there. And I can assure you that the ice cream is to die for, perfectly made. You won’t regret trying any flavor.” she added giving off a small laugh, one that might have been a little bit forced.
‘I'm terribly sorry. I was simply thinking that perhaps you might have needed help with something too, that perhaps your memories might be a bit befuddled as mine are. Forgive me, Elsa. It was in incredibly poor taste for me to make assumptions about you.’
She put her hand up shaking her head “There is no need to apologize. I just…I feel like maybe not knowing is better. I…I don’t know what my memories will bring. You know? What if there is heartbreak? What if something bad happened in my life that not remembering helps me move on?” she said rather thoughtfully. Her eyes flashed with something, some sort of emotion that even she didn’t understand. “Um…I should go. It was really nice meeting you…I’ll see you tomorrow. Noon.” she said with a smile before walking towards the door, she turned around slightly before quickly exiting. Whatever happened in that store with her…she really didn’t like.

(You as well!)
Belle bid Elsa farewell and as the woman walked away, Belle thought about what she had said about memories. Was Belle not supposed to remember something for her own good. If she once existed elsewhere, was it a horrible place? Was she around horrible people who had tried to hurt her? Part of Belle almost hoped this was the case and that she was now safe and able to move on from whatever it was. Another part felt that life couldn't have been all bad, especially if her dreams were telling her anything. Part of her wanted to remember... no matter what. Part of her was determined to get those memories back... no matter what.
