Normally it wouldn't have been a big deal to see a young man walking around in the park. However, this was late in the evening as the moon was rising and Patrick was alone. How did he get here? Well it began with him running away from the orphanage. He had gotten into some trouble again, this time defending some of the younger orphans against two bullies who tried to hog all the best toys. Patrick gave one a black eye and the other a very hurt shin. Patrick ended up being lectured and sent to his bed without dessert. Why was it that every time he tried to do something right, everything went wrong. Well, Patrick was tired of it. He was going to run off... at least for a little while. He couldn't leave the place forever. He couldn't leave Penny alone. He would hate himself for that.
So now after some clever sneaking out, Patrick was walking along in the park. He was kicking rocks and muttering certain words to himself. And without even watching he kicked a rock really hard and it hit a burly man the in the back. He turned and growled at boy.
"'Ey, young fella!" he said. "Right rude of ya to be 'ittin' me with rocks. Best teach ye some manners." Patrick stared at the man wide-eyed at first, but then knew he had to do something. He could ran, but... well Patrick was no coward. So he put his fists up and prepared for a fight.

Pongo had just settled into his chair, ready to spend the rest of his night relaxed in front of the fire when the phone rang. Loud and insistent it rang and rang. Leaning his head back, he took a breath before pushing himself out of his chair and quickly walking to pick up the phone. "Hello?" Perry's worried voice sounded on the other end of the phone. "Hold on, slow down. Patch is missing?" He paused, as she spoke quickly. "Okay, okay. Don't worry, I will find him. Yes, I can do it, I know this place better than anyone. Before you go, will you put Penny on?" Another few moments passed as the phone was given to Penny. He knew Patrick pretty well, but not as well as Penny did. If anyone knew where he would go, it would be her. "Hey Penny. Do you know where Patch might have gone? Anywhere he likes to go?" He listened to a few of her suggestions. The Park, the woods, the large field over by the palace. "Thanks Penny. See you tomorrow." He hung up the phone. As far as distance, the woods were closest, only a few blocks from the orphanage. Pongo grabbed his jacket, a flashlight, and a hat as he contemplated which way to go. Patrick wouldn't just leave Penny all alone. If anything he needed a breather. For how long, he couldn't say. But Pongo didn't think he would be too far. The park was a good place to start looking. Pongo closed the door behind him and walked down the stairs of his apartment building and out into the night.
Pongo looked back and forth, walking slowly so as to not miss anything. Patch had to be here somewhere. He scanned the dark park, streetlights illuminating the path every few yards. He was beginning to think that he must not be here when he heard the low voice of what sounded like a very large man. If nothing else he could ask the man if he had seen Patrick. Following the direction of the sound, Pongo rounded some bushes and saw an incredibly large man facing a smaller boy, or a teenager who looked suspiciously like... "Patrick!" Pongo called out, distracting both the man and the boy. "There you are, I have been looking everywhere for you!" Which was not much of an exaggeration. "Ye know this li'l hoodlum?" The man asked Pongo, eyeing him suspiciously. Pongo looked up to the man, feeling very small. But he didn't let it show. "Of course I do, this is Patrick." He walked forward and put his arm around Patrick's shoulders.

No one ever accused Patrick of being all that bright. He was brave and noble in his own way, but not very smart. He was probably going to get destroyed by this guy, but he was still ready to go down fighting. However, the fight never happened. Rod, or Pongo as Patrick and many others called him, showed up to stop things. Patrick sighed, hoping he wasn't going to get into even more trouble now. Still, at least it was Pongo and not the one who lectured him earlier.
The big man must have known what a good guy Pongo was because he simply told Pongo to keep a better eye on Patrick and then walked away. Patrick narrowed him eyes at the guy for a moment, then looked at Pongo.
"He started it," he said. "All I was doing was kicking rocks around. I couldn't help it if he was in my way when I was doing that." Patrick then frowned a bit and looked at Pongo. "So I guess you're taking me back, huh? I wasn't going to leave for good, you know? I just had to blow off some steam." Patrick then said nothing more. He didn't want to be too snappy at Pongo. He liked the guy after all. Pongo was one of the few people who treated him with respect.

The man just left, Pongo was thankful for that because he really didn't want to fight anybody, he didn't know how to fight. He had suddenly had a memory of fire, teeth and two men that were taller than he was... though he was lower to the ground than normal. He shook his head, he needed to focus on Patrick right now. " I was just wondering if I could walk around the park with you? I haven't gone on a walk yet today." He said, not ignoring what he had said, but letting Patrick now that he was here to help, not to make matters worse. He looked at him with a kind smile on his face, Patrick was a great kid, and he knew that he meant well. But intentions don't always go as planned, Pongo knew that better than many. The air was crisp and Pongo was glad he had brought a jacket. "Hey, did you bring a jacket with you?"

Patrick was ready to deal with the circumstances. He was used to doing so by now. He had to deal with a lot of circumstances in his time. He felt he might as well get it over with anyway. He was looking at another week of having his meals alone at the time out table. However, instead of just taking him back, Pongo wanted to have a walk with him. Okay... well... that was at least better than returning to the orphanage right away.
"Yeah... sure... sounds good," he said. He then turned to walk with Pongo.
Pongo then asked if Patrick had a jacket and then realized that it was a bit chilly out.
"Nah..." he said trying to sound cool, though he was shivering a bit. "I mean, it was still warm when I left."
As they walked, he looked up at Pongo and sighed.
"So... are you going to tell them about me and that guy back there?" he asked. "I mean, I didn't mean to kick the rock at him." Patrick looked down. "Seems like no matter where I go or what I do, I end up bein' some kind of trouble." Patrick didn't show this side of him around many. Pongo was one of the few.

Pongo took his jacket off and held it out to Patrick. The boy needed it more than he did, besides he was here to help. Their walk took them through the curving walkway and around a beautiful fountain. He felt a strange sense of dejavu as he looked at it, seeming to recall two very wet people, and a tugging at his neck. Pongo scratched his neck in thought, then brought his attention back to Patrick. That was what he was doing, not thinking about a forgotten past. This was much more important, at the moment. "Why would I tell them about the man? Nothing happened. He was probably just grumpy because you walked by his bench. He seemed like a yellow livered old skunk anyway." Pongo added this last part, smiling to himself. Perry wouldn't like that sort of language. He probably shouldn't have said it, but it just fit the man perfectly. "I remember when it seemed like I could do nothing right. Those are tough times. But just think. If you did nothing right, would Penny dote on you so much?" He was trying to help, didn't know if it was working, but trying.

Patrick felt relieved that Pongo wasn't going to tell them about the man. He shouldn't have been surprised though. Pongo wasn't a big snitch or anything like that. He far from delighted in getting Patrick into trouble. In fact, there were times Patrick could have gotten into big time hot water if it wasn't for Pongo. He often found himself wishing he had a dad like Pongo. Maybe then he wouldn't be provoked into getting into trouble as much. Maybe then he wouldn't have to hang at a orphanage with bullies picking on the smaller kids, bullies who were good at making Patrick look bad when he took up for the little kids.
Patrick was feeling low about always getting himself into trouble when Pongo spoke of how at one time it seemed like he didn't do anything right.
"What do you mean?" asked Patrick. "How could you have been like that? You do everything right. You're one of the few adults I like being around anyway." Patrick shrugged about Penny doting on him. "Meh, she's just nice like that. And besides, she's my sister. She has to do that now and then I guess." Patrick knew that wasn't true. He knew how much Penny loved him and he her.
After a little ways, Patrick looked over at Pongo.
"Can I ask you something... might be weird though," he said. "You always like being around us. You ever think about having a family?"

"I was a teenager once too," he said, shrugging. "You will figure out how to help people too." He kept walking with the boy, pondering on the situation of his life and what brought him to where he was. What had brought him here? Sometimes he just felt so out of place, like it was strange to be on two legs or something. "Sure you can ask me anything." he said, he was glad that Patrick would confide in him for anything. But the question took him off guard. "A family? Well..." His thoughts turned to Perry. He looked around the park, as if looking for someone in the empty area around them. "Can you keep a secret?"He asked, both nervous and excited to tell someone what he had wanted to say for weeks.

Patrick still couldn't believe that the guy he was with was troublesome to someone at some point. Everyone liked Pongo now. There were several like Patrick, who didn't like adults all that much, who liked him. Then Patrick thought of something.
"Maybe that's why you connect with me I guess," he said. "Because you used to be like me. I don't remember what I used to be like though. I don't really remember a lot of stuff to be honest."
Patrick could tell that Pongo was taken off guard by the question. He didn't mean to do that to the guy, but he was kind of glad he did because it seemed like Pongo was deep in thought over it. The fact was that if Patrick had any wish in this world, it was that Pongo could be his dad. He could live with Pongo all the time, do all kinds of stuff dads and sons did and never have to be at the orphanage again. Penny would be there with him of course. He wouldn't leave without her, even for Pongo.
Pongo then asked if Patrick could keep a little secret.
"Yeah sure, I can do that," he said. For Pongo he could anyway.

Patrick was so trusting, and easy to talk to. His comment about them being similar was spot on. Pongo had been just like him... had he? It had seemed clear to him a minute ago, but now... well he had probably been just like him at one point. Even more just like him if he was willing to keep a secret he hadn't even heard yet. "Well..." Pongo started, nervous to finally be telling someone. "I think about having a family all the time, but the only family I want is with you kids and... and Perry." He felt himself blush, which made him feel silly. But he didn't need to feel silly. His feelings were nothing to be ashamed of.
