can the living marry the dead? Delicate fingers lay upon white keys; they felt smooth, cold to the touch. Her fingers were ever so gently hovering above them. Hesitant…fearful. She had grown up with the idea that music was improper, why? She didn’t actually remember why. Maybe because the person that had told her it was improper for a woman of her equality and status to touch such a passionate weapon. Music was an idea of love, and love was one of those things that seemed entirely impossible. Look at her sister, her older sister had wed and sometimes Victoria believed the two were not happy, but she was different. Victoria had married for love, and that love was with Victor…her husband. The two had been together for quite some time, long enough that she barely remembered a time without him. He was rather clumsy and could be childish, but Victoria loved him all the same. The two balanced each other out quite well, her with her proper manners and him with his childish and fantasy filled life. It was something the two brought to the table upon their marriage.
She sighed; removing her fingers “Victor, this is impossible. I am never to learn such a…a thing.” she said with defeat in her tone. Victoria had wanted to learn, wanted to be able to play as beautifully as Victor, maybe even do a duet, but she couldn’t if she didn’t know how. She had asked Victor if he could teach her and now she was giving up. She ran her fingers through her hair, for once it wasn’t in a bun, but it was still pulled back out of her way.

[googlefont="Open Sans Condensed:300"] KEEP THE DEMONS AT BAY [attr="class","next"] Victor stuck the pencil behind his ear as he looked down at the picture. Two butterflies that swirled around each other. One was beautiful, normal, delicate. The other? Well, the other had tattered wings and a broken spirit. Or at least, that was what he had been going for. His sketches always confused him. What could they possibly mean? Where did his strange fascination for butterflies come from? He lifted his eyes at the sound of her sigh. “Victoria?” He asked, concerned about what was wrong with her. Their marriage was always so delicate — often he wondered what it had been that brought them together in the first place. They seemed from two different worlds, but he couldn’t remember a time without her. He couldn’t remember what life had been without his darling Mrs. Van Dort. They were supposed to be together…or at least, that was the way that Wonderland had decreed it. She was upset about the piano. He could see it in her eyes; hear it in the way that she spoke. "Nothing is impossible." Slowly, Victor put down the sketch pad and pencil and stood, his tall and lanky frame suddenly taking up much more space than he had been before — huddled into the sitting room chair. His long fingertips brushed over the top of the piano before he sat down next to her. “I-I-I-It’s not just a thing.” He said, sucking in a deep breath as he looked up at her. She seemed more nervous thank usual, something that confused Victor. Why was she so worked up about this. “The piano is very much like a living, breathing human. You m-m-m-must treat it with respect.” He offered her a gentle smile before he played a simple chord on the keys. “Would you like me to show you, my wife?” The word, although belonging to her, oft felt strange on his lips.

it is a bride i fear. Music. It was a way for one to speak through the act of either singing or playing. Victoria never learned either. Sure she had never tried her hand at the sound of her voice, but with her skill on the piano…she wouldn’t even dare to open her mouth. She was tired of things going so badly for her, the sound of the piano only moments ago making her wish that she hadn’t accepted the idea of trying to learn. But Victoria would not let her think badly of herself and the object of which she was sitting before. ‘Nothing is impossible.’His famous words, she was use to them by now and sure she loved him. Truly she did. His words of nothing being impossible, they just made her dread even more. It seemed like everything was impossible to her and his words just made the feeling drop down on her more and more. She glanced at him, watched as he placed down his pad and pencil and moved over to her, she watched his finger along the top of the piano before he seated himself next to her. She moved over just a tad to give him room, before glancing down at the keys. She listened to his stutter; he hadn’t done that in a while, her eyes flashing up to his face. He seemed nervous…why? Had she done something to make him uncomfortable? To make him nervous around her? ‘The piano is very much like a living, breathing human. You m-m-m-must treat it with respect. Would you like me to show you, my wife?’A soft smile appeared on her face, one that rarely ever reached her eyes. Victor was the only one that seemed to get a smile, even the smallest of smiles. She slowly nodded her head “I’d like that.” she whispered. TEMPLATE BY MINNIE OF GANGNAM STYLE

[googlefont="Open Sans Condensed:300"] KEEP THE DEMONS AT BAY [attr="class","next"] Victor’s fingertips were already on the piano, working their way through a few chord progressions before he looked up at her. His wife. His Victoria. The only woman that he had ever known. From the way that his parents acted, it had been a match of their own invention. Old money and new money — though Victor sincerely doubted that there was such distinction in Wonderland. Perhaps there was a monetary past that he knew nothing about. His chords became slightly more dark — moving into a minor key before he withdrew completely, ashamed that he was playing such a down-trodden song. His wife was supposed to make him happy, wasn’t she? Victoria probably thought him acting strange. He looked up at her, this time returning her smile with a gentle one of his own that he forced to the surface. That was what he was supposed to do, wasn’t it? Calm her nerves? That was his duty as a husband. He nodded, as if reassuring himself before he straightened his back and began his little mini lesson.“ Y-y-you were doing alright,” Victor said, as he slowly picked up her hand by her wrist and placed her fingertips back onto the piano. His hand over top of hers, he gently pressed the pads of her fingers into the keys, one by one, acquainting her with what it should feel like. “It’s my favorite instrument, you know.” He said, absentmindedly as he guided her hands through a few progressions before his hand drew back. “You have to f-f-f-feel it, you see?” He asked, looking over at her as he tried to figure out her mood. He wanted her to understand what he was feeling — perhaps music was the only way that he knew how to express himself. He seemed to have a rather difficult time actually voicing the way that he felt in a physical sense, but his music…his music took his emotions to new heights.

it is a bride i fear. Victoria was fascinated by the sound of the piano, her mind traveling back. From when she could remember, her older sister had married well, sure the two didn’t love each other, but they were alright. It was her sister that had talked Victoria into going into this marriage, a little push from her parents was all it needed before the two were married. Her family was old money, very old money and it had slowly diminished over time, her sister had thought that marrying someone of new money would be best, especially in these times. But in Wonderland…sure money was needed, but there were no classes, at least from what Victoria could see. She was pulled from her thoughts, her eyes flashing to Victor as his tone turned to rather saddened, it didn’t affect her, it was a nice sound but she was surprised it came from him. Sometimes she wondered if she wasn’t good enough for Victor, if his love wasn’t there. This was a rather arrange marriage after all, it wouldn’t surprise her if there was no love. She signed, looking down at her fingers as she was told she had been doing all right and then he was guiding her hands along the piano keys, playing a small tune as he told her it was his favorite instrument. ‘You have to f-f-f-feel it, you see?’She slowly nodded before looking up at Victor. “Are you happy?” she questioned him, catching herself off guard as well. But she wanted an honest answer from him. She had wanted to ask him this question for a while now and finally she had gotten up the courage to do so. And his music…the sadness added to it, only fueled her to question him. TEMPLATE BY MINNIE OF GANGNAM STYLE
