Sophie Hatter wasn't a particularly wonderful woman in her past life. In fact, she was everything plain and ordinary. At least, that's what she thought of herself. She never put much stock in her own selfworth because her sister, Lettie, was the beautiful one, following suit after their mother. In comparison to them, Sophie was nothing more than a female version of her father: a hard-working individual. Her father's hat shop was very important to him and so when he died, Sophie made it her mission in life to continue his shop - maybe as a way to keep his legacy on or to keep him close to her heart, but either way, she worked hard at making sure everything ran smoothly. Her sister, Lettie, worked in a bakery, forgetting the hat shop, while her mother ventured to new lands for inspiration for new designs so they could continue to run and be on the forefront of fashion. Coincidentally, given her career choice, Sophie didn't dabble much in the way of her own fashion. [break][break]
Her story really begins, however, on the day she went to visit her sister at the bakery. On her way, two soldiers made advances in her direction, calling her a mouse and a cute one, at that. A beautiful man named Howl stepped in and redirected their advances, making the soldiers leave Sophie alone. Once the soldiers leave, however, it is found out that Howl and Sophie are being followed by henchman of the Witch of the Waste. They are able to ditch the henchman and Howl delivers Sophie to Lettie's bakery unharmed. Lettie tries to explain to Sophie that Howl saved her because she was beautiful, but Sophie is certain there's another reason. And as she goes back to the hat shop, Sophie is certain that everything that is to do with Howl is behind her. [break][break]
That is, of course, until the Witch of the Waste, who is angry with jealousy about the attention that Howl has given Sophie, appears in the hat shop. Sophie tries to escort her out, but on the way, the Witch cursed Sophie into an old woman. Scared and embarrassed, Sophie heads off on an adventure of her own to find a curse for her curse while evading her friends and family so they can't see what has come of her. Traveling far and wide in search of someone who can help, Sophie meets Turnip-Head who aids her in finding Howl's Moving Castle. Although Sophie is instantly hesitant about getting into the castle, she realizes there is no other shelter for her for the night, and so enters the castle. [break][break]
Once inside the castle, Sophie meets Calcifer, the fire who keeps the castle going. They make a deal that if Sophie helps Calcifer break his deal with Howl, that Calcifer will help her be free of her curse. The next morning she meets another of Howl's associates, Markl, a young boy who works seemingly as Howl's secretary. When Howl joins them, Sophie assures him that she is the new cleaning lady, hired by Calcifer, and takes her job very seriously. [break][break]
Howl thinks of Sophie as more as just the cleaning lady, however, which is evident by a strange request. He tells Sophie that he has been summoned to the Royal Palace to defend his country in war, but that he is a coward and can't possibly go to war. And so in his place, Sophie goes to the Royal Palace to tell Madame Suliman that Howl won't be coming. On the way she runs into the Witch of the Waste once more, and this time the Witch isn't so hot. While climbing the steps to the palace, the Witch runs out of energy and visibly grows older, and being the nice person she is, Sophie helps her get to the top. Deep in the palace, things turn ugly. The Witch is stripped of her powers while Howl makes an appearance in front of Madame Suliman while Sophie is talking to her. They're able to get away from Madame Suliman and her soldiers, but Sophie knows that this is only the beginning of the problems occurring in their lives.[break][break]
When they get back to the castle and sleep off the night before, Howl has something in store for Sophie the next morning. When she wakes, she finds a new portal that leads to a field of flowers, and everything is beautiful. Sophie has a sense, though, that not all is what it seems, and she questions Howl about it. Sophie converts her hat shop to a flower shop and it is during this transition that her mother visits for what is a seemingly innocent visit. Unfortunately, her mother leaves behind a spy blob behind, and the Witch throws it into Calcifer's mouth which causes him to lose energy and unable to protect the castle as the country breaks out in war. Sophie by this point has broken free of the curse and runs outside to find Howl saving them from bombs. She pleads with him, asking him to please run away, to which he says he's done running, and he leaves to continue his duty. [break][break]
Sophie moves Calcifer from his hearth, breaking the connection the castle had to the market. After the castle crumbles, Sophie places him back in the grate and gives him hair to fuel him, asking him to take them to Howl so they can let him know they're okay. In the midst of this, the Witch realizes that Calcifer has Howl's heart, and takes Calcifer out of the firepit. Subsequently, the Witch catches fire and Sophie is forced to throw water on her, which, unfortunately, puts Calcifer out and the castle falls apart. [break][break]
As the castle collapses, Sophie falls over a cliff. When she gets up, she notices her ring turning blue and follows the light into the black portal that only Howl has ventured into - the black void. It's there that she witnesses Howl as a child and figures out how to save Howl. When she returns, she retrieves Calcifer from the Witch and pushes him into Howl's chest, which releases Calcifer back into his star-form and returns Howl's heart to his body. Turnip-Head is thusly changed back to a prince and goes off to end the war, and Sophie and Howl go on to marry and live their lives together.[break][break]
But strangely, a very strong curse came over their land, one that Howl could not predict. It's brought Sophie to Wonderland where she is back to feeling her old, unconfident self. She's sure that there's some strength inside her but she cannot seem to withdraw it for some reason. Sophie is sure something happened to her that was horrible and cruel, tearing her apart from something much greater than herself, but in this world, she just doesn't have the strength to look for what that is.
