One who dreamed of fame and fortune had to start somewhere. Even the richest of men and women started with small potatoes. Mathias Faust, owner of the shop Things Best Forgotten and self-proclaimed fortune teller, had to be smart and tricky. He had to know the weaknesses of those he dealt with. He had to play his cards right. And finally, he had to maintain that pokerface of his. One mistake and the game was lost.
Small potatoes it was today. That meant doing his usual tricks to fool the people at the festival. Charge little, but sucker in a lot, that was the way to go about it. Faust set up his table and looked about at those around him. Gullible fools, all of them, their money right for the plucking. He just needed to give the right speech.
"Gather around, one and all, and have your fortunes told!" he said. "True it's a beautiful day, but are there gray skies ahead? Best to know before they hit and get a head start on things. Who knows, ladies and gentlemen? For a few bucks, a minor contribution, I may save your life. Or even better... show you the way to riches untold! Gather around!" He then cleared his throat. "Also check out a few of these genuine magical amulets from far off lands. Today only- buy three and get the fourth fifty percent off! Now who can beat a deal like that?"

the water filled my lungs I SCREAMED SO LOUD BUT NO ONE HEARD A THING The summer festival. It was the first time Pearl really interacted with anyone casually, because before that, Pearl had been spending her nights alone, camping in the wood and begging for food with her little puppy eyes. It wasn't a very fulfilling lifestyle, to say the least. Still, she had been working to find a residence for herself, be it in the wood or the village or any other place. But preferably the village.
Either way, Pearl needed not to worry about it that day, because after all, she was enjoying the festival! People whizzed past Pearl to reach their location as vendors roared into the air, advertising their services to guests. Pearl shut most of them out, but one right in front of her happened to intrigue the 14 year old. For a few bucks, a minor contribution, I may save your life. Or even better... show you the way to riches untold!
It sounded like a scam to Pearl, but it was interesting nonetheless. The young girl skipped her way up to the man. She said nothing as she grabbed a card from the top of one of his decks, except for, "Do these even work?" It was a bit of a rude thing to ask, but her tone remained sweet as she mumbled the words in the man's direction. Besides, it wasn't like the answer much mattered anyway; Pearl had no "few bucks" to spare. She remained curious, however, as she picked through some of the man's fortune telling devices.
