Carl is a very quiet man, and one of the most gentle you will meet in Wonderland. He loves children, and making them happy, so he has become a balloon seller for that very reason. It's a job that often requires one to stand in the hot sun for hours on end and receive very little pay in return, but he doesn't mind as long as he can put a smile on a little girl's face with a horse or unicorn-shaped silly balloon, or a dog for a little boy. Carl, just like his customers, always has a smile on his face, and greets all those who pass by his balloon stand with a cheery hello. If he knows you well enough he will even start some small talk with you. He might be slightly shy at first, though not unfriendly, if you are someone he hasn't seen before, but come back often and he will open up as you get to know him. His frequent customers are often his most loyal friends, and his favorite customers get the most special treatment in all of Wonderland.
[break]Making him angry is one thing anyone has yet to do. Typically, if he sees you're in a dour mood he either avoids you, or tries to be as quiet as possible. Still, that gentle smile will remain. Annoying him, on the other hand, is quite easy, but he has become good at covering it up.
[break][break]The side to Carl that you don't see actually might surprise you. When you have your back turned, his smile might turn sad, but a daydream will start in his eyes. Carl oftentimes dreams of adventure, and if he really could, become an explorer. He's not really sure where this yearning for greater things comes from. He's very passionate, and will see any promise through to its end.
[break]By all means, he could be out traipsing the world, but something holds him back, something that might have something to do with his idea of how he fits in the puzzle of this new world called Wonderland. Carl has spent his whole life (or lives, depending on what perspective you are looking at) being an unassuming man with an unassuming personality. He's always considered himself part of the bigger picture, and not part of his own special story.
[break][break]Like many in Wonderland, Carl feels like something has been missing in his life since the curse took place. He's curious to know about what happened to make him forget everything before five months ago, when everyone just woke up not remembering anything. He's also curious about the past before then.
[break][break]
Carl Gene Fredricksen was born on a cold January 11th to Dean Fredricksen and his wife Margaret. Dean was a balloon vendor at the local amusement park, and Maggie was a stay-at-home mom. Carl was a curious and inquisitive child, and such a bundle of energy that his parents didn't know what to do with him at first. He would get into everything that they didn't babyproof, and if there was a room in the house he hadn't seen yet, they could probably find him there. As he grew, he discovered that the best way to get out of trouble for being out of place or leaving something out of place was a wide, charming smile. Speaking of trouble, Dean and Maggie didn't realize it then, but the first day they let him play outside was the day they lost him. Well, not literally, but after that he never wanted to spend another day inside. By the time they let him into the neighborhood, he knew every single hole and blade of grass in the family's yard.
[break]For all his bravado in nature and around the house, though, he was shy around people. Give Carl some time with the person and he would warm up, but on first meeting, he would hide behind his mother. Eventually he got old enough to where he didn't have to do that anymore, but he still had trouble making eye contact. It wasn't much better with kids around his age. Carl would get along with them, sure, but he would much rather play with himself if given a choice. Also he really had no good friends.
[break][break]That is, until one day when he was ten. Over the past year Carl had become interested in exploring, throwing himself heart and soul into the endeavor and dream, because of the short films about Charles Muntz that were shown before Nickelodeons. Whenever he was given an allowance, Carl went to the theater. His mom and dad had also given him a pilot's cap and goggles, and the kid wore them everywhere: to school, to bed, to the supper table. On this particular occasion the informational film had been about Charles Muntz's removal from the explorers guild, but that didn't get Carl down any. Afterwards he picked up a balloon from his father, who lovingly wrote "Spirit of Adventure" on it (the name of Charles Muntz's ship), and headed home, carrying on a dialog in his head about being an explorer.
[break]He was passing a particularly run-down neighborhood when suddenly he heard the familiar call "Adventure is Out There!" It was coming from a nearby house, that had been boarded up for years. Curious, and totally disregarding his parents' advice not to go exploring around the neighborhood, Carl slipped into the yard and went through the door- marked with "Spirit of Adventure" in black letters. The voice giving commands got louder, and soon he could see that it was a spritely little girl, about his age, with a helmet and goggles on. Then he noticed that one wall was completely covered with clippings of Charles Muntz and his exploits. Carl turned around to read.
[break]Suddenly behind him a loud voice scared him out of his wits: "What are you doing?" He just about fell over, and let go of the balloon he was carrying, which floated up into the rafters. The girl promptly started to interrogate him, claiming that this club was only for explorers, and that they didn't just accept any kid with goggles off of the street. Carl tried to stammer a reply back but couldn't.
[break]He needn't have worried. The girl brightened and said he was in, welcome aboard. Carl was a bit too shellshocked to reply at first. When he didn't reply, the girl blinked and asked if he was OK. Carl looked down, and then back up at her, scared that if he was to speak up, she would shout at him again.
[break]The girl's countenance dropped. "Hey, I don't bite." She reached up and pulled off her helmet; a shock of red hair exploded out, all staticky from having been in the helmet. When that still didn't work, she next looked to the many buttons she had on her overalls. On closer inspection, Carl found that they were actually soda caps. "You and me, we're in a club now!" She unpinned a grape soda cap and stuck it on him.
[break]That did the trick. Carl grinned, and the girl grinned twice as big in return. Then she seemed to remember something, and looked up. "I saw where your balloon went! Come on, let's go get it!" She disappeared around the corner.
[break]Carl went to follow, and she popped around the door. "My name's Ellie!"
[break][break]There was a hole in the floor separating Carl from his Balloon. A single board spanned across it. He really didn't want to shimmy across... but Ellie was behind him, encouraging him to go on. Pushing him. Finally Carl just sucked up his fear, took a step- and felt himself falling into thin air as the board broke under his feet. Really the fall knocked the wind out of him more than anything, other than breaking his arm that is. Ellie, like a good girl, called the ambulance.
[break]Later that night, Carl was reading in bed; his arm immobile in a cast. Suddenly something bumped against the back of his book. Seeing the balloon with a stick tied to it scared him out of his wits. After a moment he realized it had written on it, in his father's handwriting, "Spirit of Adventure".
[break]He couldn't help but jump again, and scream as again the loud voice assaulted his ears: "Hey Kid!" It was Ellie. Carl collected himself as she crawled up into the window and sat on the ledge. "Thought you might need some cheering up! I've got something to show ya." Carl climbed out of bed, and together they made a makeshift tent out of string and a blanket.
[break]What she was so excited about- enchanted Carl too. She had taken an old scrapbook and written "My Adventure Book" on the front. It turned out that she, too, had a dream to go to South America and live next to Paradise Falls. Despite the fact that she had ripped the page about Paradise Falls right out of a library book, he agreed to help her get there. Crossed his heart, even.
[break]Her last words to him were, "You know, you don't talk very much... I like you!"
[break][break]That was the start of a beautiful friendship. Carl clicked with Ellie. Though she could be forceful and strong-willed, he completely understood and was willing to work with it no matter how uncomfortable it made him feel. Somehow, he didn't know how he did it, but he seemed to tame a little bit of her crazy personality. It could be just as unruly as her firey red hair sometimes. In return, he felt like she recognized and built on his quiet demeanor and solidarity. They complimented each other. And even if they bickered (which did happen from time to time), they could find common ground in the exploits of Charles Muntz and other world-famous explorers.
[break]Despite some people's doubts and expectations to the contrary, Ellie and Carl remained friends through their tween years. They were the same age, so they matured together, and it made it easier. Often they would continue to play at the rickety old house, which Ellie had affectionately dubbed "her playhouse." Though jokes were made at school about Carl and Ellie being "together", they really didn't consider a romantic relationship until they hit high school. Carl had harbored feelings for Ellie for many years, but was always afraid to show them beyond friendship. What if she rejected him? He didn't want to lose his best friend in the whole world.
[break]However it would be her that would make the first move (as usual, but that's beyond the point). They were leaving the playhouse one afternoon for home. It had started to rain. Both of them loved the rain so they drew out their goodbyes for a little longer than usual. Suddenly Ellie hesitated, like she had forgotten something, and turned shy. Her gaze flickered away from him, and then toward him- and before he knew it, her soft lips were on his. It was only for a brief moment, but it felt like an eternity, and left Carl speechless. His head was whirling so fast that he was completely silent all the way through dinner that night, and barely touched his food. Dean and Maggie were concerned, but deep down knew it would pass, so they didn't push him.
[break]That night, Carl realized the true extent of his feelings for Ellie. He loved her. And now that he knew that she loved him back, it was a relief to admit it and not a worrying burden.
[break]The next day, when he saw her at school, he sucked up the nervousness in his stomach and asked if she would go out with him. In return, he was met with a squeal and a hug.
[break][break]After that Carl would never be the same. It wasn't an overnight change, but surely he became more outgoing, even becoming captain of the chess club. He discovered his love of children also, and went to work for his father selling balloons. There was nothing that made him happier than making Ellie smile, or second best a child. He truly discovered the romantic in himself, and a bit of a protective side, too. He never tried to be too clingy or persistent, but chased off other potential suitors for Ellie (that happened a couple times) and always was thinking in her best interest: manly, mature decisions that even his father approved of wholeheartedly.
[break]He waited until they were out of school and he was confident in his job at the new zoo (as a balloon vendor, of course) before asking her to marry him. She, too, had obtained a position there as a zookeeper. Even though he had known her parents for a very long time and vice versa, he asked them for her hand before he asked her. It was courtesy, after all. Thankfully, they agreed, and started enthusiastically making wedding plans on the spot.
[break]Again he was met with a squeal and a tight hug at his proposal. She said yes so many times he lost count. Before they knew it, the wedding was past with a whirl, and Carl carried her past the threshold of the playhouse. They had bought it when it had come up for sale, and with tender loving care they fixed it up, and made it livable again. Another place, as well, became special to them- a grassy hill nearby their house. They frequently went to have picnics there and look up at the sky, trying to interpret the clouds.
[break][break]Marital bliss was more blissful than both of them had expected. Through the good times and the bad, Carl found himself relying on Ellie's bouncy personality, and he tried to be her steady rock. They still had dreams of going to Paradise Falls, and they started a fund for it, putting their loose change in when they could. They also wanted to start a family; they tried several times...
[break][break]
[break]Carl opened his eyes to a roof that was not familiar at all, and yet all too much so. He felt the bed beside him (why? It was an instinct) and no one was there. An emptiness threatened to take him over. But no. The feeling was gone almost as fast as it came. What was he doing. He, Carl Gene Fredricksen, was a simple balloon vendor... the thoughts came automatically, naturally. But had he been one yesterday? Really he couldn't remember. He pondered everything over as he glided through the standard morning motions- showering, shaving, dressing. No answers came. He remembered with ease where his materials were, all the crazy long balloons the kids loved, as well as the standard helium-filled ones, but not a single customer or street looked familiar.
[break]Since then, which was about five months ago, Carl has tried to just live his life out, making new memories and friends. He reads up when he can on Wonderland, and has even gone on a couple self-guided treks. He has a hunger for answers: what was he before he woke up that day? What was his life like? Meek, mild-mannered, humble Carl watches going-ons intently and determinedly, and will until he has the answers he seeks.
