"Wherever there is hope, I'll turn it into fear." A time before being called the Boogeyman, a time before being the embodiment of fear, is not a time that Pitch Black could ever recall. If there was a time that he’d even existed as a mortal man, he would not be able to tell you about it. He has never pursued the mysteries of his past since he has his doubts in whether or not it would be worth looking into – that and he has never been so certain if he’d really like to know who he was before he was the king of nightmares. However, the earliest times that he can recall were times that he had quite enjoyed. In the earliest years of mankind, fear was a powerful thing and the Boogeyman was something that many believed in. During these early periods Pitch absolutely thrived. How could someone who lived for fear and darkness not flourish in a time called the Dark Ages?
[break][break]
Unfortunately for Pitch, these gloriously dark times did eventually come to a halt. The Dark Age came to its end and the Boogeyman was no longer a thing to be feared expected among some children here and there. But even they began to forget about him and eventually Pitch found himself very alone. Nobody could see him any longer and he had nobody. The years of loneliness made him very bitter and vengeful toward those who helped to push him out of human lives and with time Pitch eventually decided that an empty life was not for him. He’d not let the world have peace while he suffered in his despair.

Eventually, Pitch reappeared with a plan to rid the world of those who brought it such joy – the Guardians. He began to change dreams into Nightmares, taking the lost teeth from beneath children’s pillows, and ruined both Easter and Christmas. However, the Guardians defeated Pitch and put a stop his plans thanks to the help of one child who had still clung to his belief in the Guardians. Defeated, Pitch was dragged back into the dark, his own Nightmares turning on him when he was faced against his own fears. And so he was once again alone.

Finding himself in Wonderland probably could not have been considered terribly traumatic for Pitch. After all, life before Wonderland had been him stuck alone in the darkness. Of course, Pitch can’t remember any of that. All that he knows after finding himself in this place is that he can’t quite figure out where he fits into all of it, although he has a feeling that his place is not with anyone else. Even without his memories his personality still remains and he still finds joys more in someone’s fear rather than their happiness – obviously the opposite of what most would feel. There is also still a part of him that is deeply lonely and keeps him from fully finding his place among the others lost in Wonderland. However, he’s becoming more willing to make that change the longer that he is alone.

"Maybe I want what you have, to be believed in." Being the spirit of fear, one could probably figure out that Pitch takes great delight in turning dreams into nightmares and seeing people in a state of anxiety. This has much to do with the fact that fear had been the tool that made it so that Pitch Black was believed in. As long as he was believed in then he would be seen. So on the outside, he is proud and comes across as very full of himself. He may even seem to be quite bored or unimpressed with others. He is a manipulative and spiteful being, filled with envy and rage. However, he can often keep his cool for the sake of trying to get to whatever it is that he wants. But beneath the arrogant attitude he is rather sad figure. He is filled with loneliness and sadness from the many years of being shunned for what he is.
