It felt like his post was always changing but kept him confined to the palace. Well it wasn't too bad. He could've been stuck having to stand still all day like the ones at the entrance or the throne room. Though Tod still liked tne thought of being outside more. It was odd, he just felt more intrigued to the outdoors than indoors. A thing he kept to himself since it would sound odd. Besides it wasn't like it would matter if he said it. Though maybe he'd get a permanent spot in the palace to guard if he mentioned it to a certain someone.
Tod shuddered at the thought. It was fine to mess with the old guy but he didn't fancy being stuck in here. And truthfully he doubted there was really anyone but the queen and her family that did.

When Evelyn and Malefi... well Malia took over the Palace, they knew they needed reliable subjects. They needed subjects who could do their job well. They needed subjects who would be loyal...
They needed subjects who minded their own business. Once one snooped and found out what was really going on, the Curse would have been for nothing. Well... unless the duo could catch the eavesdropper and eliminate him or her in time.
The Queen felt Tod was reliable enough. As she recalled, he was a fox or coyote or something in the Enchanted World. In other words, a dumb animal in her opinion. With stupidity often came loyalty. Then again, the Queen thought most of the subjects were intellectually inferior compared to her. If anyone came close to being her intellectual equal, it was Malia.
Still, it didn't hurt to check on the help. Such precautions were necessary after all. One false assumption about a loyal servant or guard and that could cost her. She wouldn't fail this time, and she wouldn't allow an underling to cause such failure. Approaching Tod, she gave him a false smile.
"Well now... Tod, isn't it?" she said. "Making sure the Palace is safe from potential villainy, are we?"

There were things Tod didn't know or understand back when he was a fox but that was due to youth and being raised by a human. This remained true here as well. There were things he didn't know though he never considered himself really smart, just somewhere on the average level. To his surprise and honestly, he never thought he'd run into her but there she was. Immediately he stopped in his tracks and bowed. He might not care for the strictness of the old fellow he wasn't going to be disrespectful to someone he didn't really know and they were the Queen to add onto it.
"Your Majesty." Tod greeted before standing back up straight. "Yes, Tod is my name. Yes, my superior said that I should patrol within the palace for a day or two."
What now? I can't really just...talk to her....can I? Tod thought in his head.
He really had no idea how to handle this situation other than just be respectful toward her and mind your tongue. He wasn't crazy enough to go angering the Queen now.

Tod did seem respectful enough. However, she had dealt with "respectful" subjects in the past who turned on her when Snow White and her Prince stormed the castle. But this was a different scenario. Tod hadn't suffered years of being oppressed under the reign of a wicked queen. Evelyn had to be more careful this time. She had to play fair to the people and only show her dark side. She even permitted the silly Summer Festival the village was about to have.
"Your superior?" the Queen said. She knew who he was talking about of course, but it always seemed off when someone referred to some other than herself as a "superior". Still, she wasn't going to have a fit about it. "Well you are doing a fine job so far. And you do love working here, don't you? It's not every day that I chose one to ensure the safety of my palace."
This is where she paid attention to his eyes. He would certainly not be stupid enough to say he didn't like working under her. However, one's eyes always told the truth... well unless one was trained to allow them to deceive as well anyway. She doubted Tod was one of those people. So... she anxiously awaited his answer... and the way he would say it. All the while, she gave him another false warm smile as she waited.

Tod nodded as he stood there, yep his superior. The old timer was a pain but he'd put up with it.
"Just the guard in charge of the group I'm in or the Captain of the whole guard is what I meant, your Majesty." Tod explained. "Of course your Majesty, I have no complaints about anything with the job."
Even if I'm confused as to why I have it. Tod pondered.
He really didn't have any complaints about the job, he just found it confusing. He just wasn't a fan of being kept indoors and he didn't understand it. It's not like he had anyone to aid him in figuring this out. The job was a good one and it was always fun to mess with the old timer.

Evelyn nodded as Tod explained just who he meant by his superior. She loved messing with the heads of her new subjects like this. She loved making them feel awkward when they really had no reason to feel awkward at all.
"Ah yes, him, our good Captain of the Guard," she said. "Well he is doing a fine job too, isn't he? Though I hardly see why he would need to keep a close eye on the likes of you. You seem to be quite dedicated to your job. Who knows, should something ever happen to him, you might take up the position yourself. Would you like that, Tod? Would you like to have that sort of power... that authority?"
Evelyn then nodded as Tod said that he didn't have any complaints about the job. That was certainly to his benefit. If he had any, Evelyn would of course hear them out. However, she would only act if his complaints regarded any who would seek to betray. If he complained about being mistreated himself, she would simply give him one of two options- grin and bear it or leave.
"I'm delighted to hear this," she said. "Let me ask you, Tod, are you willing to go to any lengths to protect your queen?"

"Yeah, he is." Tod answered.
Despite being a killer of joy, he is. Tod thought as he stood there.
He really had no clue on what to think of this little interaction. Though at her words on if something happened to the Captain then there was a chance that he'd get the job. Tod was really surprised by this.
"Naw, I don't think having me in that role is a grand idea." Tod answered. "Sure I'd be honored but I really wouldn't like that to be that high up ya know? Besides there's other people in the guard who are more deserving of it."
Or at least that was how he saw it. He never really wanted to be a Captain or anything higher, a simple guard was fine enough. At her next question, he found himself confused. What was this all about?
"Well of course, why wouldn't I?" Tod asked, showing his confusion.

Evelyn's smile lowered when Tod said he doubted he would be a good Captain of the Guard. He was probably being humble... but perhaps the Queen picked up a bit of defiance there. She circled him a moment, staring at him coldly.
"So what you're telling me is that while I can put enough faith in you to be a common guard, I can't put enough faith in you to possibly be a Captain?" she said. "Such lack of confidence in oneself promotes concern, Tod. Perhaps you should sit and think things over. Having such power and authority does lead to other great things after all."
Evelyn nodded when Tod assured her he would go to any links to protect her. She then smiled.
"I'm glad to hear it," she said. "Because you may have to put such a promise to the test quite soon. I know you wouldn't believe this, but there are people in the village who are uncomfortable with a few of my rules and policies. Some might even feel they are already weary of my reign. Such thoughts lead to rebellion... and attack. I want you to be ever aware of wat is going on around you, not only here, but when you are in the village. Any talk of treason will be reported to me immediately, won't it?"
