Ellie Sloane was the girl that children avoided either because they were scared of her, or their parents told them to. She was born into a family that lived in a trailer park and had very little money. She had few toys and clothes - just enough to get by, really. But the thing about Ellie that is most endearing is the fact that none of the traditional hardships that others dwell on made her see her life as any different than anyone else's. She simply continued to live life as it was, which made her strong and independent. What also fed into that was her lack of materialistic things. While she had little toys to play with, she had something much more important - imagination.
[break][break]
The fact that her parents didn't pay much attention to her made Ellie forced to enjoy her own company. She learned how to be her own friend, and to go on adventures by herself. Of course Ellie couldn't go far as a child, but she went as far as her overalls would take her. There was an abandoned house that she used to play in which held all of her adventures. She was a space explorer, a firefighter, and an engineer. She was a scientist, a fire dancer, and a witch. All things that little girls dream of being...well, those were not the things that Ellie aspired to be. She was much more than that, she had much grander aspirations than being a princess. It wasn't like she could be one if she wanted to - with frizzy red hair and a gap between her teeth, Ellie wasn't exactly the prettiest little kid on the block.
[break][break]
But one day she found a kid that didn't care. Of course, he'd barged in on her playing because he lost his balloon, but Ellie realized that they had a common interest: exploring. Unfortunately she had pushed him a little too hard and the kid broke his leg, and when she visited him afterward he seemed uneasy about her being there, but Ellie felt bad. She also felt an urge to protect him in a way, but also to be his friend. Carl was the first boy to look past her rugged appearance and accept her crazy, wild demeanor. He wasn't afraid of her - well, maybe a little - but even if she came on a little strong, he seemed to enjoy her presence.
[break][break]
At first there was simply a friendship between Carl and Ellie, and they grew to be very best friends. As they moved into their teenage years, however, Ellie fell hard for Carl. He was sweet, generous, and always considerate of her feelings even if she didn't always return the favor. He was quiet and let her be crazy, but in his silence he also leveled her down a bit. She found that a love she never thought existed was blooming for Carl, and for a little while she didn't mention it. She didn't want to make things weird between them or push him away, but one day as they stood in the rain saying goodbye at their playhouse, Ellie went for it and kissed Carl. Nothing was the same after that.
[break][break]
All of the fear that Ellie had, thinking that expressing her feelings for Carl would change their relationship, was disproved quickly. Carl returned all of the feelings she had for him, and he changed. In becoming his, Ellie triggered some sort of deep emotional bond within Carl that made him slightly more outgoing. He became protective of her in a way that Ellie had never seen him behave. He wasn't clingy or jealous, he was simply acting in a way that showed her that he really meant it when he said he loved her. Ellie had never known such a love. Her parents loved her, she thought, but they weren't close. They didn't share this amazing, unconditional loving bond that Ellie and Carl had with each other. It was amazing, and Ellie just hoped it wasn't fleeting.
[break][break]
After years of being together, they finally sealed the deal by getting married. Ellie was amazed at how happy she felt. They got a job working alongside each other, and they built a house together. They did everything together and never bored of it, even after all the years they spent together. They had ups and downs, they had petty fights like everyone else, but the thing she treasured most of Carl was the fact that no matter what, he was always there.
[break][break]
In the middle of their lives, in the middle of trying to conceive a child and grow their family, a curse of magnificent proportions took over. Ellie has now retreated into a formal version of herself, forgetful of the relationship she had with Carl, and the woman he made her be. She feels a loss, an emptiness that cannot be filled, but she also has now found a most amazing adventure - a life that she's never known existed. Ellie is friendly, adventurous, and brave, and she's exploring the new world of Wonderland and nurturing her personal desires all at the same time. She enjoys other people and she's convinced herself that she's enough, but still Ellie feels there's a part of her missing. Despite the fact that she is on the adventure of a lifetime, Ellie is in search of a treasure far more sacred than any jewel or undiscovered piece of land: she wants her memory.
