Esmeralda was a fearless, streetwise but good hearted gypsy. She is sultry and free-spirted, but her biggest wish is for the outcasts, like her friend Quasimodo and fellow gypsies to be accepted into society and treated as people, not like they are property. She is quick witted, and sarcastic and isn't afraid to verbally challenge anyone. Especially people who would treat other people badly, or talk down to people. She does not like people, or animals being treated poorly and she will jump in to help someone and defend them.
She became part of a group of gypsies in France (When she was kidnapped from her mother by the same group) that would throw a fesitival known as the Festival of Fools in Paris. The people of the town would dress up and wear masks and they would pick a king of fools. She met Quasimodo during one of the festival of fools and she caught the attention of Claude Frollo the Judge/Minister of Justice in Paris, and before the festival she had a run in with Phoebus de Chateaupers who was a French Knight of the King's army and became Frollo's Captain catching his attention as well as he ended up (with help from her pet goat Djali as well) helping her get free from two guards who harass her while she is dancing in the streets for coins.
When it was revealed that Quasimodo was not wearing a mask, the people insulted the man and threw garbage and other things at him. Esmeralda stood in front of him and helped him out, sticking up for him and helping to free him when they tie him up. Quasimodo fell in love with her and she liked Quasimodo but not in that way, and she and Phoebus had a mutual attraction, but the fanatically religious Frollo fell for her in an unhealthy way. Becoming incredibly obsessed and terrifying. He tries to capture her, sending out a manhunt but she ends up in the church where Quasimodo rings the bell and is saved with a claim of sanctuary at first. However, Frollo bluffs saying that he knew where the Gypsies home was so she ended up being captured and was sentenced to burn at the stake for the crime of witchcraft. She is saved by Quasimodo.
As Esmeralda she regularly wore a a white petticoat with a Purple sarong, and a teal and gold bodice as well as golden hoop earrings and a gold bangle on her her wrists and on her right ankle and favored walking barefoot a lot. Now as a human she will often go barefoot, still very much the free spirit she was before though in many different ways. She wears shoes when required to, favoring high heeled shoes and boots as they feel almost as freeing to her as being barefoot. Kind of like being closer to the sun and moon and stars, the air, etc.
Esmeralda was very tanned as her usual self because of her family background, but when she was made into a human she ended up being very pale for some reason. She is still beautiful and fearless, streetwise but good hearted. She still has the raven-black hair she did before and the emarald green eyes, but now her style is pretty different, favoring black as the color she wears now. Her personality is still pretty similar to what it was, even though she does not remember being Esmeralda. Now she is Mera, still a free spirited woman that is passionate, especially about helping people who are being treated poorly and who do not seem to fit in.
She is kind and will be there for anyone who seems to need help and she isn't afraid to speak out for them or do what she can to help them. She loves to sing and dance and can often be found doing so. She has a day job but she will sing and dance on the street for a little cash as it is fun and she usually donates the money to people she sees who needs it. She truly cares about people but she also is not at all afraid to go off on people who are rude and mean.
