JUST A LITTLE BIT CAUGHT IN THE
MIDDLE
Had Wonderland always been her home? Miel wasn't sure. In fact, she wasn't sure about well... anything. She'd been in the world for as long as she could tell, but it didn't feel right. It didn't feel like home at all. Everything was so unfamiliar and surely if she'd grown up here she would know it like the back of her hand.
Lately, she'd been making attempts at integrating herself with the people around her. Someone out there had to know something about her and if she hid her time away, she'd never get to the bottom of things. It was with her new mind set that Miel had applied for a job. It was simple, surely baking would come natural to her. She had an intuition for knowing what mixed well together. Except things spiraled out of control before she knew it. Miel never expected to be baking for the palace and she certainly never expected that she would be so horribly inept at baking some pastries.
What had the guard said? Right, that her cupcakes were inedible. That was before he accused her of trying to poison the queen. Miel had never met her highness before, why would she want to poison her? It didn't matter, because if she didn't get out of there that second, she'd be arrested. So she ran, as far as her feet could take her, until she reached the woods. She stopped at the edge, weary of how this might turn out. She'd never strayed from the village. When she heard the voices and hurried footsteps not too far way, she entered the unfamiliar territory. She delved deeper and deeper until she was certain no one could find her.
As the minutes passed and no one came by her hiding spot, she began to relax. It was the first time Miel cleared her mind. There were no questions of how or why. She simply closed her eyes and let the calmness surround her. She'd been resting against a tree trunk when she heard it. Footsteps. Her serenity dissolved, it had to be one of the guards looking for her. She just knew it. Miel's heart felt like it was about to erupt in her chest. There was no point in running, they'd find her sooner or later. As she stepped from behind the tree, she held her hands up and exclaimed, "I wasn't trying to poison her, I swear, it was a mistake!"
