Tarrant Lewis Hightopp aka the Mad Hatter was born and raised in Wonderland - by who and when he knows not, but that's of little importance. The fact remains that he grew up in Wonderland among the craziness and that craziness slowly seeped into his mind. He's calculating in a not-so-calculating way, and he was a demeanor that few people have attempted to see. They see a crazed, loony, and otherwise unwell man, but Tarrant has a lot more to him than his overuse of complicated and unsolved riddles and poems.[break][break]
Long ago he met Marvin March and they became best friends and, due to the Red Queen, they became trapped in a never-ending tea party. They sang for the Red Queen at a celebration and they were sentenced to death for "murdering the time." Thankfully they escaped death's grasps, but Tarrant and Marvin were convinced that Time was angry at them for attempting to murder him, and so Time stopped for them. They became trapped in a never-ending tea party where the clock stays at 6:00 forever. Whether this is some sort of made up story in Tarrant's mind or actual truth, no one will ever really know, but still he and Marvin rarely leave their tea table - at least, they didn't, for a very long time. Even when the very cute seven-year-old Alice came to visit them and celebrate in their party, as well, Tarrant let her leave without so much as a true goodbye, even though she'd really moved his heart.[break][break]
When the Red Queen overthrew the White Queen and took over Wonderland, everything that Tarrant knew was taken from him. He, Marvin, and their friend Malani managed to sneak away mostly unnoticed and were left unharmed at their little shack in the middle of no where. There they continued to have parties, but it was mainly to keep their minds away from the pressing manners on Wonderland as they waited for their savior, Alice, to return. Tarrant was quite intent that Alice would save them all - he just knew it. The days waned on, though, and they waited and waited for her and finally, when she did come to them, she wasn't the same Alice at all. And all seemed lost once more.[break][break]
Tarrant is still convinced that Alice is the savior, that she just needs to find herself, and so he attempts to take her around Wonderland to persuade her real self to come out. In the process, he sacrifices himself and is captured as the Red Queen comes after them. He is then tortured for the location of Alice but doesn't say a peep - he knows she is the savior and wouldn't put her in harm's way. Alice finally finds her way to the castle on the day that Tarrant is ordered to be executed, but to save him, he and Alice convince the Queen to allow him to hat her. Unfortunately, Alice is found out and Tarrant is then ordered to be executed, with no way out this time. However, he and the Cheshire Cat manage to embark on a successful escape, after which Tarrant turns all of the Red Queen's people against her. [break][break]
After returning to Marmoreal, the White Queen urges them to go to battle, but at that point Alice does not step up to the task of undertaking the Jabberwocky, to which Tarrant takes her place. Unfortunately, the White Queen shuts him down, and all other contenders, and so they go to battle without a champion. Alice, having thought it all over, finally decides to be the champion, and with her in the lead they follow her to battle, and finally come out on top.[break][break]
But after the battle, Tarrant begs Alice to stay in Wonderland with him, and unfortunately she turns him down, telling him she must return home and so she does. Tarrant continues to live in peace with the Red Queen shunned out and his tea parties resuming with no error. That is, until the curse hit, and he can no longer remember who he once was.[break][break]
There's a tinge of familiarness like no other, and Hatter knows that Wonderland is his home, but he's no idea who he once was. He knows he's known as the Mad Hatter simply because Hatter has been his nickname for all time, and he's found his tea room which he has now continued to run, allowing new people to come in and join him for parties. He knows deep down there's something he's missing, but quite honestly he is quite happy with his life, and he's sure things will work themselves out in the end.
