If you are not brave — if you do not take the risks that are asked of you, then who are you? Who will you ever be? [break][break]
My name is Fa Mulan and my story is a bit of a whirlwind. I am still attempting to sift through the details myself. I thought that I must be crazy at first. [break][break]
No one else can remember who they were. Not a single memory in their mind, and yet, I can remember so much. [break][break]
It was long ago in a place called China. It was unlike Wonderland, beautiful rolling hills full of rice paddies that stretched as far as the eye could see. China was a land of beautiful in a different sort of way than where we are now. Mountains and rivers, but most importantly, The Great Wall. That is where my story seems to begin. [break][break]
It was over the wall that Shan Yu and the Huns invaded my country and brought war upon us all. I was supposed to be the golden daughter and bring honor to our family through my future marriage, but along the way, things got turned around. Instead of marrying, I took my father’s place so he would not have to go to war. [break][break]
I became Ping — a woman disguised as a man within the Chinese army. I couldn’t let my father risk his life, not when he was so old. It was a simple sacrifice that I would make a million times over. My ancestors — and my guardian Mushu — watched over me while I was at war, guiding and helping me make my way, but it was not always easy. I was pushed to my limits, learning martial arts and combat skills. My brain learned to function tactically instead of in the reactionary phase, giving me a unique advantage. [break][break]
It was also there that I met Shang. There was something about him — he saw me in a way that no one else would and for that, I was always grateful. The troop mobilized a few months after that, but we found that the Chinese army had all but been destroyed by the Huns. We came face to face with our biggest fear, but despite being out numbered, we managed to defeat them. [break][break]
I was revealed after that — revealed as a woman and a disgrace. They left me there. The only reason I was not killed was because I had saved them all. The world is a strange place sometimes. [break][break]
In the end, it was me who saved the emperor and China from Shan Yu. Shang forgave me and we were to be married. A lot of things had been planned. Until we weren’t who we had been any longer. [break][break]
My family, Shang. Mushy, Khan, Little Brother. None of them have any memory that we ever knew each other. Sometimes I watch them from a distance, but it feels like the world is repeating itself. Instead of hiding myself under the rouse of a woman in a man’s world, I am hiding myself as an enlightened being amongst the unknowing. [break][break]
Here I am not Fa Mulan, but Mulan Ling and I do not feel like the brave soldier that I once was in China. I feel like a coward. I feel like a disgrace. [break][break]
Something strange has happened to all of us and I don’t know how to figure out how to fix it. I don’t know how to tell Shang who I am. I don’t even know how to tell him who he is. It feels as if I’m the only one with the memories. The only one who knows where we came from because…it wasn’t here. We are something else. I must be brave as I was before. I must honor my family because it is my duty. [break][break]
Even if they can’t remember who I am. [break][break]
