James P. Sullivan, sometimes called Jimmy by his parents, was always the big man on campus, even as a child. His father was Bill Sullivan, a famous scarer. Bill's friends always thought James would follow in his father's footsteps and be a top scarer. James, who came to be known by his friends as Sulley, had the mindset from a young kid that because his father was such a great scarer that he would be, too. He felt he didn't even need to try hard to be a good scarer because it was in his blood. Because of this frame of mind, Sulley was full of himself and entirely cocky. He figured he didn't have to lift a finger and he would breeze through life. Working hard was for people who weren't already promised a bright future - but boy was he wrong.
[break][break]
When Sulley got into Monsters University, he entered with dignity and confidence. He arrived to his first Scare class late and did so with a promising roar that got everyone's attention. As soon as he said his father's name, he was looked upon by students as a prime candidate for the Scare program. Sulley knew he belonged there, too. Scaring was in his blood and while he didn't think he needed teaching on how to scare, he knew a job at Monster's Incorporated would only come after a good 'education.' He didn't put enough effort into his classes as he should, though, and relied on his family's legacy to get him through his classes.
[break][break]
Goofing off and playing pranks were definitely things James enjoyed. But, unfortunately, they weren't exactly enjoyed by everyone. When Sulley kidnapped the mascot for the rival college and sneaked into Mike Wazaowski's room, he certainly didn't think anything of it other than being a goofy college kid. It sparked a huge feud between him and Mike, though, and although it brought him limelight for the ROR fraternity, the rivalry between himself and Mike was something he couldn't ignore. Although he pretended that Mike didn't bother him, the fact was that James saw things in Mike that he didn't have. There were facts about scaring that James hadn't bothered to learn and he was mad at himself subconsciously for it, but not enough so to change his habits.
[break][break]
Unfortunately for James, on the day of the final exam, his and Mike's feud came to a climax when Sulley accidentally broke Dean Hardscrabble's scream-cannister. The Dean put both of them on the spot, and of course instead of listening to her question, Sulley broke out into a loud roar. The Dean subsequently explained to him that he failed the test, and Mike as well, and that they were both kicked out of the scare program. James instantly blamed Mike for his failure and stormed off, completely irate with Mike, but also with himself.
[break][break]
The next semester was torture as Sulley was stuck in a boring class for cannister handling. Constant glaring at Mike made his day even worse, but he wanted Mike to understand his anger. It wasn't until James watched Mike enter Oozma Kappa into the Scare Games that James let up - because OK needed another team member to enter, and Sulley wanted to be that person. Eventually, since he was put on the spot, Mike agreed to let James join the team. After seeing the members of OK, though, Sulley figured they wouldn't have a chance at winning and they should give him - him especially.
[break][break]
The thing that seems to break Oozma Kappa the most, though, is not the members' lack of experience, but the rivalry that continues between Mike and Sulley. After realizing that they're not going to get anywhere in the competition while fighting, Mike and Sulley finally rally together and work as a team. It is then, and only then, that OK makes it to the final round against ROR. Sulley, however, thinks that Mike is going to bring the team down and so cheats to be able to win. When OK finds out, they stalk off, leaving the trophy behind and Sulley, as well, to feel guilty.
[break][break]
After venturing into the human world, Mike and Sulley are ultimately expelled from Monsters University. What isn't expelled, however, is their friendship. Thankfully, Mike forgave Sulley, and together they began careers as mailmen at Monster's Incorporated. Sulley kept his eyes peeled on being a scarer, though. It was his dream, and he felt as though he'd let his father down by being a simple mailmen. While Sulley enjoyed going to work at the factory every day, he admired the scarers who walked past him in the halls and continued to dream of being among them. When the factory held open auditions for scarers, Sulley immediately got Mike's support and went ahead with trying out. Much to his surprise, he was made a scarer.
[break][break]
Sulley grew into the company's role of top scarer after years of hardwork and dedication. His personality changed completely and he finally found himself as a scarer - he was dedicated, loyal, and serious about his job. He even had his best friend, Mike, at his side helping him do the job. As a scarer, Sulley was naturally hesitant of human children who were said to kill the fiercest monsters with the slightest touch. When Boo enters the factory after a mistake, Sulley cautiously tries to get her back to her door without discovery.
[break][break]
In the time that Sulley tried to get Boo back home, he found a fatherly role for himself in her life. She was sweet and funny and not at all what he'd been led to believe that children are. He became protective of her, so much so that he even chooses Boo over Mike when he goes to her rescue. It is found that Mr. Waternoose, the CEO of Monster's Inc., was doing illegal business, and he is arrested by the CDA. After the company is left without a leader, Sulley is made the CEO and changes the company policy to extract laughter, not screams, from children, making the entire company not only grow in value, but in heart. And, thanks to Mike, Sulley was able to visit Boo once again.
[break][break]
During his reign as CEO at the company, the curse hit. James was sent to a world he could never have imagined, with crazy hallucination-like plants and creatures. The thing is, though, that James has retained his memories. He remembers his old life and the friends he had, and he is on a search for them to try and figure this whole thing out and what happened. While he's been turned human, he still remembers his life as a CEO in his own world, and strives to make people see what happened and how they can go back to their old lives.
