Imagine it: a life of luxury, of never having to worry about a thing. That was the life Berlioz lived as his real, true self. He was one of three kittens that Duchess gave birth to, with Madam Adelaide being their caretaker. Berlioz never knew his father because his mother was bred with another sophisticated cat to produce nothing but the best kittens that money could buy. It may come off as superficial, honestly, but it wasn't. Madam Adelaide did everything in her power to make sure that Duchess and her kittens were comfortable in her home. She loved them with a full heart and went out of her way to make sure they knew that. Berlioz certainly did.
[break][break]
Although Berlioz never considered himself spoiled, he definitely was - just not very rotten. He wasn't really interested in materialistic things unless it was food. He could get down on some milk, that was certain. Really, though, Berlioz much more enjoyed being able to do things, like play piano, listen to music, and play with his siblings. He liked getting into trouble and going on adventures in the big mansion they lived in. And, as any kitten does, he enjoyed snuggling up to his momma.
[break][break]
Unfortunately, he and his other siblings were very naive. When a day came when they awoke to the rain and found themselves on the edge of a riverbank, Berlioz and his family could hardly believe it. They knew that their beloved owner would never do such a thing, and that they just had to get back home to her. After the initial realization of what happened, though, Berlioz didn't quite mind going on this grand adventure. He was determined he could be an alley cat, and was rough and tough enough to handle the world before him.
[break][break]
That was, of course, until they met a real alley cat. Berlioz was in awe of Thomas O'Malley, the orange alley cat that seemed rough around the edges but all in all very nice. He was quite fascinated by him. The fact that Thomas offered to accompany them back to their home made Berlioz look up to him even more so. While crossing a set of train tracks, Marie fell into the river and Berlioz was the most frightened he'd ever been in his whole life. While he and his siblings, especially Marie, tended to fight occasionally, Berlioz loved them with everything in his power and the fact that he almost lost Marie just like that made Berlioz very upset. When Thomas saved his sister, Berlioz became very attached to him. He was the fatherly figure that they had been missing out on. He protected them, saved them, and took them under his watchful eye in every way he could. Berlioz was very much infatuated of the idea, at that point, that Thomas could become their real father.
[break][break]
After they met a pair of Geese that led them back to the city and they met Uncle Waldo, a drunk goose, Berlioz and his family traveled across the rooftops of London. Berlioz was completely amazed when they came across Scat Cat and his band. They played songs for the kittens all night long and rocked into the wee hours of the morning until it was finally time for bed. Berlioz and his siblings watched in silence as Thomas and their mother snuggled together out on the edge of the roof, and from then they knew that they were all meant to be together, as a family. He was wild and untamed, but he was part of them now despite whatever excuses he attempted to make to prove otherwise.
[break][break]
Thomas, as set out by his promise, returned Duchess and her kittens home and reluctantly leaves them to be. However, when Edgar realizes they are back, he stuffs them in a sack and hides them in an oven. Berlioz was distraught; they figured out it was Edgar the whole time who'd dropped them off in the beginning, not Adelaide. They meowed for their lives but no one heard them - at least, until Roquefort finally came to their rescue. Roquefort, a little mouse, went off to get Thomas and his gang to try and save Duchess and her kittens and, at last, he found them. Berlioz was surprised when Thomas saved them and Edgar was sent away just as he'd tried to do to them. In the end, everything turned out how it should: Thomas joined them as their family, Madam Adelaide started a foundation for stray cats which meant Scat Cat and his gang got a home, and everyone just seemed much happier after the entire ordeal.
[break][break]
And then, of course, the curse hit. Berlioz and his family, which he no longer remembers, were brought to Wonderland and made humans. Berlioz doesn't remember a thing of his old life or struggles of his life as a kitten on the streets, but what he does remember is his likes, and his personality is all there. He's such a quiet and timid thing at times, but gosh is he a character.
[break][break]
Berlioz is incredibly mischievous and up to no good. He gets himself into situations that some people might not be able to get out of, but he can talk his way out of a paper bag. He's a smooth-talker and enjoys using his suave demeanor to enchant others around his little paws. He can be a little snappy at times and demanding when he wants something, but Berlioz tries to keep his faults under control. Berlioz is actually a very lovely and sophisticated guy. He's caring and loyal to those who he lets in. He does have a little bit of trouble accepting others out of fear of losing them - an effect of the curse - but if Berlioz lets you into his life, it's because he wants you there dearly. When he's with his friends, he's also very friendly and outgoing. Berlioz can be the life of the party. He is playful and enjoyable and though he certainly has a reputation for being smooth with the ladies, he really simply wants want everyone wants out of life: happiness.
