Name Daniel Oliver Johnston
[break]Nicknames Dan, Ollie, Tramp
[break]Name Symbolism (OOC) Daniel - Walt Disney got his inspiration for Lady and the Tramp from a short story called "Happy Dan, the Whistling Dog". Dan is often short for Daniel. Oliver- This can be taken three different ways: Oliver might be in reference to the Charles Dickens character, an orphan who finds a family and a home, the first name of Tramp's main animator, or the first name of Lady and the Tramp's music score writer. Johnston- a reference to the last name of Tramp's main animator.

Drifter and a vagabond: Daniel Johnston has been called that too many times for him to count, and there really is no better way to put it. Aloof, distant, flighty, many find him to be an enigma. It's hard to pin him down, and impossible to get close to him; he prefers being unattached, and so will avoid commitment completely. It seems he's always changing something; this even goes to the extreme that he can't call the same building his home for long. He might go and sleep in one place, a friend's house perhaps, after a month or so disappear to crash under the stars in a canvas tent, then go to three other places to stay before crashing at the first friend's house again.
[break]All you can count on for sure is his chipper attitude and his wisecracks. Almost nothing seems to faze him, even attacks on his own character; he'll listen to insults, jeers, jabs, and slander and take it all in stride, keeping his pep. No matter what, he seems to be light-hearted, and continuously laced with fresh adventurous energy. Some say that he borders on wild. Daniel never fails to be the clown, and his smile is extremely contagious. Also, he has one of the best set of puppy eyes in Wonderland. Well-loved by the ladies, he has garnered a reputation over the last few months for being a womanizer. A womanizer, who leaves girlfriends almost as fast as he gains them. However for this otherwise crushing reputation he has a redeeming factor that keeps ladies coming back: his romantic nature. Of course his good looks help, but he has a knack for making dates memorable. He seems to know every dating trick in the book.
[break][break]Of course there are those that hate him because of his reputation. The general public has learned to stay away from him in fear of being hurt, and some instinctively distrust him. He is far from the playboy and reckless rogue he is made out to be, however. Really, he is more lost than anything, searching for the purpose in his life. Distancing himself from everyone is just his way of trying to determine whether this is really where he's supposed to be. Even though he can't remember his life with Lady, the emotional loss of losing that lingers and makes his careless attitude that much greater.
[break]Daniel is very protective of his friends, and fiercely loyal. He will always come back for you, even if he knows you have no faith in him. He would put himself in the line of fire, take a fall, stomach a punch, or take a dangerous bet if it meant that you were safe. He's extremely laid-back, and though he doesn't always show it, he has a soft heart.
[break]That doesn't mean that he's all flowers and forgiveness, though. Hurt someone he loves, and well, you better just watch out. He has his ways of subtle revenge. Not only can he take abuse, as he has proved many times, he can give it. Hurt him enough times, and his grudge will come back to haunt you.

[break]
Daniel Oliver Johnson wasn't always human; once, before the villains' curse, he was a humble dog of mixed breed, living with his best friend and mate Lady, a Cocker Spaniel, in the Darling household.
[break][break]But even before that, he was a stray. He was born a stray, in fact, to two alleyway dogs, strays themselves. Born without a name, raised on the street, and unofficially dubbed "Tramp" by annoyed humans, by the time he left puppyhood and was able to roam on his own, he knew how to steal for meals, when and where to go for a free one, and what exactly it took to survive. The world was a place that was often unfriendly and cold to living, homeless things. Humans' compassion could be milked and exploited if begged for at the right times, but there was also danger: dog catchers, and others with shady purposes for canines, roamed the streets. Tramp saw many a friend carried away by men who sold strays for fodder in dog fighting matches, a big business then.
[break]Tramp grew to become one of the most recognizable dogs living in the shadows of his hometown. Though he was a loner, and rarely stayed in the same place all the time, preferring to hop around to different homes, garbage cans, and alleyways every night, he cared greatly about other dogs, and would do anything to protect them. When the dreaded dogcatcher wagon came around, he would help to break out captured strays. He was caught a couple of times, but always managed to escape through flukes or outright distraction.
[break]No one could deny that underneath his rough exterior, Tramp was a very handsome dog. Soon many she-dogs started to fall for his strength, good looks, and sharp wit. He, too, started to notice dogs of the opposite gender. Unfortunately, he soon proved himself to be just as bad about changing girlfriends as he was changing his place of residence. So, though he was well-loved and revered for his daring and kindness, he also gained a reputation as frivolous, unattached, and aloof- which he was. Or at least he considered himself to be for many, many moons.
[break][break]Then Lady entered his life, and everything changed. Tramp had known Lady for a long time as the Darlings' pampered Cocker Spaniel, but since she was a house dog, he didn't have a chance to get to know her so well. He was better acquainted with her neighbor-dogs, Trusty and Jock. He couldn't call them friends though.
[break]One day, Tramp just happened to be walking by the Darlings' yard, and overheard a distraught Lady talking about how her owners had been turning a cold shoulder to her lately. From clues he pieced together from her description, and also having seen Mrs. Darling in town the previous day, he instantly knew exactly what was going on. It was a situation that Tramp had seen often: when a human was expecting a puppy, dogs went to the wayside. Deciding to butt in on the conversation, he tried to warn Lady about the tragedy that was about to happen, but Trusty and Jock wouldn't have any of it.
[break]After that it would be a few more months before Tramp would think of the pretty little Cocker Spaniel again. The next time he saw her- he didn't have to think at all. The terrified little Spaniel was running down the street, terror in her eyes, long ears streaming behind, chased by the rowdiest pack of strays in town. Tramp jumped in, automatically, putting himself between the pack and Lady. He couldn't just let a defenseless dog be ripped to shreds.
[break]It was only after the whole ordeal was over that Tramp noticed the cold steel muzzle clamped over Lady's mouth. He would have bitten it off himself, but the leather was too strong for his teeth. So he led Lady to the only other one he knew could work wonders on something like that: a beaver, someone he had made friends with during his brief stays at the zoo. Eventually, Mr. Beaver was able to get the muzzle off.
[break][break]Tramp started to show the now-free Lady around, and tried to convince her to live like him, away from the influence of pesky humans, who abandoned you at your slightest misdeed. Though he didn't realize it at first, something about him changed as he spent more and more time with her. He had never truly fallen in love with anyone before- all the she-dogs he dated, those were just distractions, fruitless searches for someone that would complete him. He never expected to grow attached to a soft house dog. He found a fond nickname for her- Pige, short for Pigeon.
[break]Night fell, and all Tramp found he wanted to do was treat Lady to something... and he knew just the place. He led her to an Italian restaurant he had wrapped around his paw- or at least the owner, Tony. Tramp and Lady were served spaghetti and meatballs- only the best for the mutt and his Lady. After that they went on a romantic walk through the park and finally fell asleep side-by-side on a grassy outcropping.
[break]Lady started to fall for Tramp, too. The starlit night reflected itself in her eyes, and the "bella notte" made her realize that she wanted Tramp by her side all the time. But her devotion was still to her family, and the new baby, whom she admitted she had gotten quite fond of. Tramp tried to not look too crestfallen, and like a gentleman (which he also considered himself to be) he offered to walk her home.
[break]He really didn't know what happened- he got distracted by the chicken coop. He got it stuck in his mind that chasing chickens was one last thing that Lady needed to do before she went back to being a boring house pet. Sure, it would anger the humans- but no one would learn of their crimes- right? He tried to convince her to come with him, but she refused. In the end he went in by himself, in hopes that he could get Lady to follow.
[break]But his back was turned one second too long. What was to come around, but the dog catcher wagon. He managed to get them out just in time- but they managed to catch her after she fell behind. They wasted no time in scooping Lady up and carting her away. It was the worst feeling, going to address her and realizing that she wasn't there. Tramp ran everywhere, looking for her, but when she wasn't hiding somewhere, he assumed that the catcher had gotten her. And he couldn't stop it this late in the game. The one time he most desperately wanted to save the dog in the wagon- he couldn't.
[break][break]He moped around for a few hours, feeling completely guilty and down. It was only then that he seriously thought about how he loved Lady. She had become immensely important to him. In that instant he knew he needed to go and apologize, and win back her friendship at least.
[break]So he wandered back to the Darlings' house, where he was relieved to see that Lady had been picked up from the pound by Aunt Sarah. At least she still was willing to take care of her after what Lady had supposedly done to her cats. The Cocker Spaniel was now chained solidly to her doghouse, and Jock and Trusty were just leaving as Tramp wriggled through the fence. At the sight of him, Lady seemed quite put out, and when Tramp went over and tried to reconcile with her- she snapped. As by coincidence, lightning lit up the sky, and it started to rain. Somehow she had found out about all his former girlfriends, and was pretty angry with him over it, even to the point of throwing back the bone Tramp had given her the day before.
[break]Tramp didn't have the heart to argue, and went away sulking once more, bone in mouth. How had he messed up so bad? The girlfriends- they had been nothing. He could understand her being jealous and feeling cheated, though.
[break][break]He was barely a block away when he heard a familiar, desperate bark- Lady's. It sounded almost exactly like her bark when the dog pack had been chasing her the day before. Tramp at this point would do anything for her. He whirled and sped back, dropping the bone in the process. As he approached, he heard Aunt Sarah yell at Lady to be quiet, just in time for the large, black, vicious rat to worm its way into the house. Lady seemed glad to see him this time, and breathlessly told him to use the dog door. Into the fray Tramp charged, slipping in the dark house unnoticed. of lightning lit his way.
[break]The smell of Rat was unmistakable, and Tramp's sharp nose could detect it a mile away. It was in the nursery, where the baby was sleeping quietly. Bolting in, Tramp began to bark at the rat, who was perched on the edge of the cage, eyeing the baby hungrily, greedily. Lady followed right behind him, having somehow broken free from her chain. It jumped down, and Tramp pounced, a brief, intense fight that ended up in a dead rat in a dark corner.
[break]Aunt Sarah could not have ignored the commotion even if she had been sleeping, and was soon at the doorway. Tramp had accidentally knocked over the baby's crib, and that was all Sarah saw. Tramp found himself shut in the closet, and through the crack under the door he saw Lady being dragged the opposite way, through the door.
[break]Minutes passed, that seemed like hours. Tramp laid there placidly in the dark and waited for the inevitable: whenever a human you didn't belong to found you in their house, they always called the dogcatcher. Usually he'd be desperately trying to get out of this situation, but this time was different. He was content having done something truly good for once in his life, for the little Lady that was his love. And, if she was able to live contentedly with the Darlings for the rest of her life, and without him, that would be fine. He would be satisfied.
[break]Soon the man with the net came, and led Tramp out the door to the wagon. Tramp didn't see Lady, but heard some faint sobs coming from behind a door. He tried to call to her, but he was pulled along too quickly. The dogcatcher seemed surprised when he went to put Tramp in the wagon, and the dog didn't even resist. He was used to this particular mongrel being a pain to apprehend and hold a hand on for long.
[break][break]On the way to the pound, Tramp laid his head down on his paws, and resigned himself to life in a cage. It wouldn't be the "footloose and collar-free" life he had lived before, but he would get through it knowing that Lady and the baby she cared so much about were safe.
[break]Suddenly, however, the low, mournful bark of a hunting hound pierced the air, and Tramp looked up just in time to see Jock and Trusty come through the rain. Trusty, with his long stride, caught up effortlessly to the wagon, while Jock stayed behind, nipping at the heels of the horses. Tramp just managed to brace himself before the horses balked and he was thrown against the side of the wagon, and the back door popped open.
[break]Seconds later, a car pulled up in the rain, and Lady hopped out, running up to the wagon and yelping joyously. All Tramp managed to get back was a relieved "Hi, Pige."
[break][break]For his heroic act, Tramp was adopted into the Darling family. Before it would have bothered him, but now that he had Lady his life was complete, and he was willing to settle down. And so they lived out the rest of their lives, surrounded by family, friends, and four puppies, three girls and a boy.
[break][break]Or, that was what would have happened.
[break][break]
[break]When that terrible curse was cast, the whole course of Tramp's life was dramatically altered. His mind was wiped clean, and no longer did he walk on four legs. Instead, he woke up to find himself laying on a thick bed of green grass, with absolutely no idea who he was or where he was. It was almost like when you wake up in a different place than normal and panic for a moment because you can't remember where you are. He laid there, and tried to think of his name; thankfully, one came almost instantly to mind: Daniel Oliver Johnston. It was too natural to be coincidence: that had to be it. Now, where was he? He sat up and rubbed his eyes. Something felt slightly off as he placed his feet under him and felt the grass between his toes, but he couldn't place exactly what it was. Then he pushed himself up and stood. That, also, felt extremely odd, but it was natural, so again it had to be right. He went straight for a path that was nearby (was it called a path, and was it a visible line worn down by the feet of many travelers?) and followed it. Soon he came upon someone else who seemed to be as confused as he was. Daniel tried to make conversation (Why was his first instinct to say, "woof"?), and the two agreed that they had to stick together and see if they could find out why they were here and what to do now.
[break][break]Five months have passed since then, and Daniel has learned much. It seemed like all the inhabitants of the land had the same problem, they couldn't remember who they were before they woke up that morning. Still their instincts gravitated toward civility, and the residents built a town. Daniel tried helping them construct frames, plan out rooms, decorate inside and nail shingles, but after only a little while at each job he became restless, and quit one to move to another.
[break]Before long he gained a reputation as a drifter, charming but a ladies' man but quite unwilling to commit. This gave rise to the nickname, "Tramp" and a song/poem, "He's a tramp, but they love him, breaks a new heart every day..." Much the same poem/song that Lady had sang to her in the dog pound back in their world.

If he's a tramp, he's a good one, and I wish that I could travel his way...
