It all started with a seed.

There was an old woman who couldn't have children. One day, she was given a seed by a fairy. The old woman planted the seed, and it grew in to a tulip. Once it bloomed, it opened to reveal a very small girl, no bigger than the woman's thumb. She was thereby named Thumbelina, and she was raised as the woman's very own child. Living on a farm was fun, but Thumbelina wished and dreamed for someone her size. Everyone, and everything was so much larger than she, and it was difficult to stay out of the way. There was even a time that she had almost got baked in to a pie! It was a good thing she was careful.

She would sing sometimes at night, dreaming of finding a companion that was her size. A fairy prince, named Cornelius heard her song, and he flew on his Bumblebee, Buzzby, to find her. The two of them had a night of flying around on Buzzby, flying - he acted as her wings - and singing together. It was perfect. He promised to come to her the next night when he took her home, and she went to sleep thinking that things were finally going to be happy, and wonderful. However, someone else heard her sing, and also fell in love with her. It was a toad named Grundel, and his mother kidnapped Thumbelina while she slept so that she could marry her son.

Mrs. Toad explained to Thumbelina that her new life would be with them, singing with them, and marrying Grundel. Although Thumbelina rejected this offer, the Frog family wouldn't take no for an answer. They left her stranded on a lily pad, and they went off to find a priest to marry Grundel and Thumbelina. Terrified, Thumbelina called out for help, and she was saved by a swallow, named Jacquimo. He took her to his friends, the Jitterbugs, and they declared that they would help the young lady find her way back home, so she could meet her prince. Jacquimo offered to help find the prince, not knowing that Cornelius himself was looking for Thumbelina as well.

The obstacles were just beginning for the poor girl. On her way home, she was forced to perform at a Beetle Ball, by a insect named Beetle who became enamored with her, scared away the jitterbugs who had been helping her previously.. and when she failed, she was kicked away, completely on her own. When winter had come, things were looking incredibly bleak. She was cold, and it was hard to find shelter. Jacquimo was still gone - he had gotten a thorn in his wing - and Cornelius was still lost. The Prince had gotten frozen inside of a lake. Thumbleina thought things were completely over.. until she was found by a very sweet field mouse.

The mouse, who was known as Miss Fieldmouse, tells her of the fairy prince's demise.. but she had told her she was dead. Thumbelina was distraught, and couldn't believe the story. When the two of them spoke to one of the fieldmouse's friends, a Mole, he told her that he found a dead bird. Jacquimo. The bird wasn't quite dead though.. he was merely unconcious. Feeling as though her entire world had crumbled, she accepted a proposal of marriage from Mister Mole. Luckily, she never had to go through with the wedding.

She declared, as she was about to get married to him, that she could not marry someone she did not love. Little did she know, the jitterbugs were at work, thawing out her true love. Things, however, got hairy when Grundel and Beetle crashed the wedding. While she was being fought over, Jacquimo pulled himself out of his unconscious state, and flew her to safety. The two went to the Vale of Fairies, where she found Cornelious once again. He was alive, and the two of them were married.
Too bad she didn't quite have a happily ever after, though.

She was sucked in to Wonderland after the curse, with no memories of her friends and her true love. Although she no longer feels miniscule, she still feels as though she's very tiny in such a big world..and she often feels lost, and alone as though no one will ever understand her.
